# Assembly line worker

> Performs a defined step in making a physical product, hundreds of times a shift, to a standard someone else will check.

Impact index: 50/100 · confidence Low confidence · assessed 2026-09-10
This is not a probability of losing a job.

## Scope

Written for operators in discrete manufacturing — electronics, automotive components, appliances, consumer goods — in Asia, Europe and North America. Process industries (chemicals, food processing), craft manufacturing and small workshops differ enormously, which is why confidence is low.

## Tasks

### Repetitive assembly at a fixed station

- Direction: Automating
- Basis: evidenced (verified records attached)
- Why: Fixed automation and industrial robots have been replacing this task for fifty years wherever volumes are high and parts are consistent, and collaborative robots have lowered the volume threshold at which it pays. The remaining human stations are the ones where parts vary, volumes are low or the product changes too often to justify tooling.
- What this does NOT establish: Automation decisions here are driven by labour cost relative to capital cost, which is why the same product is assembled by robots in one country and by people in another. Wages, not capability, set the pace in most of the world.
- Records:
  - 2025-09-25 · Deployment · IFR's World Robotics 2025 counted 542,000 industrial robots installed in 2024 and 4.66 million in operation worldwide (+9%); Asia took 74% of new installations and China alone 54% — https://flyvolo.ai/en/changes/ev-20250925-assembly-line-worker-1 (source: https://ifr.org/ifr-press-releases/news/global-robot-demand-in-factories-doubles-over-10-years)
  - 2025-09-25 · Deployment · IFR counted 2,027,000 industrial robots working in Chinese factories, with 295,000 installed in 2024 — 54% of global demand and the highest annual figure ever recorded — https://flyvolo.ai/en/changes/ev-20250925-assembly-line-worker-3 (source: https://ifr.org/downloads/press_docs/2025-09-25-IFR_press_release_China_in_English.pdf)

### Dexterous or variable assembly

- Direction: Still human-led
- Basis: evidenced (verified records attached)
- Why: Cables, gaskets, fabrics and anything that deforms remain hard for robots, and mixed-model lines that change every few units defeat fixed tooling. These stations are where people have stayed even in heavily automated plants, and they are a large share of final assembly in electronics and vehicles. Tesla told its shareholders in 2018 that it had added too much automation too quickly and moved two general-assembly steps back to semi-automated or manual work.
- What this does NOT establish: These stations survived in heavily automated plants, which means they survived as a small remainder inside a plant that already shed most of its line jobs. Surviving the last round is not the same as being safe.

### Inspection and quality checks

- Direction: Automating
- Basis: evidenced (verified records attached)
- Why: Machine vision inspection is mature, cheaper than a person and does not get tired at hour seven, and it has displaced visual inspection stations in most modern plants. What remains for people is the judgement on borderline cases and on defects the system was not trained to see. Audi now checks around 1.5 million spot welds a shift with AI at one plant, where staff used to sample welds by hand with ultrasound.
- What this does NOT establish: Machine vision displaced visual inspection stations in most modern plants. What remains is borderline cases and untrained defect types, which is a fraction of the shifts inspection used to fill.

### Tending machines and running changeovers

- Direction: Being augmented
- Basis: evidenced (verified records attached)
- Why: As stations automate, the operator's job shifts to keeping the automated cell running: a few people tend several machines. The work is less repetitive and more diagnostic, and it is the form the assembly job increasingly takes rather than disappearing outright.
- What this does NOT establish: A few people tending several machines is the whole point: the ratio is the saving. This task describes the form the job takes on the way down, not a stable destination.
- Records:
  - 2025-11-19 · Deployment · Figure published the results of an 11-month humanoid deployment at BMW Spartanburg: one station, sheet-metal loading, 1,250+ hours of runtime and 90,000+ parts — https://flyvolo.ai/en/changes/ev-20251119-assembly-line-worker-2 (source: https://www.figure.ai/news/production-at-bmw)

### Programming and maintaining the robots

- Direction: New task
- Basis: evidenced (verified records attached)
- Why: Every automated line needs technicians who understand both the product and the equipment, and plants consistently report shortages of them. Robot programming has become far easier — teaching by demonstration rather than code — which opens these roles to experienced operators rather than only engineers.
- What this does NOT establish: Plants report shortages of these technicians while also not funding the training that would produce them from the operators they already have. The opening is real and the bridge to it is not built.
- Records:
  - 2026-07-02 · Labour impact · China's labour ministry put 12 further new occupations out for comment, among them 'embodied-AI robot application technician' — https://flyvolo.ai/en/changes/ev-20260702-assembly-line-worker-4 (source: https://chinajob.mohrss.gov.cn/h5/c/2026-07-10/569764.shtml)
