## Scope

Written for corporate FP&A, investment banking and equity research analysts at junior to mid level. Portfolio managers, traders and quantitative researchers face different dynamics.

- Direction: Being augmented

- Why: Spreadsheet assistants now draft formulas, reconcile inputs and explain variances, and the mechanical parts of a model update are much faster. The model's structure — what drives what, which assumptions matter — is still designed by a person, because a wrong structure produces a confident, well-formatted wrong valuation.
- What this does NOT establish: Structure design is the interesting hour in a week of updating. Automating the update removes the hours that justified the headcount, while leaving the hour that justifies the title.

### Gathering data and summarising filings

- Why: Extraction and summarisation of public documents is a solved problem for the tools, and the data vendors have integrated it. This was the bulk of a first-year analyst's hours and it is the part firms are removing first.
- What this does NOT establish: The summaries are only as good as the reader's ability to notice what was left out. Juniors who never read a full filing lose the instinct for what a summary hides.

### Deciding what to assume

- Why: Assumptions are where the analysis actually lives, and they rest on judgement about management, competitors and the world that has to be defended in a room. Tools can lay out scenarios; deciding which one you believe, and putting your name to it, is the job.
- What this does NOT establish: Assumption-setting is the senior half of the job by definition. Analysts are not hired into it; they arrive after years of the modelling work that is being compressed.

### Explaining to the decision-maker

- Why: Draft memos and decks are faster to produce. The conversation in which someone commits capital is a human negotiation about risk appetite and trust, and the analyst's credibility — built by being right before — is what makes the number believable.
- What this does NOT establish: The meeting in which capital is committed happens a few times a quarter. It protects the seat at the table, not the work that filled the rest of the calendar.
