This is not a probability of losing a job.

## Scope

Written for generalist HR, recruiting and people-operations roles in mid-sized and large organisations. Executive search, labour relations in unionised settings and compensation specialists differ.

## Tasks

### Sourcing and screening candidates

- Direction: Automating
- Basis: evidenced (verified records attached)
- Why: Matching profiles to requirements, ranking applications and even conducting structured first screens are all being built into applicant-tracking systems, and the volume of applications — itself inflated by candidates using the same tools — makes manual screening impossible anyway. This is the fastest-changing task in the function.
- What this does NOT establish: Automated screening is regulated in several jurisdictions as high-risk decision-making, and discrimination liability stays with the employer. Adoption is constrained by law and by lawsuits, not just by capability.

### HR administration

- Direction: Automating
- Basis: evidenced (verified records attached)
- Why: Rule-based, high-volume and documented — self-service portals and assistants handle the majority of employee questions, and the HR systems vendors have made this the centrepiece of their products. What remains are the exceptions, which are a small share of volume and a large share of difficulty.
- What this does NOT establish: The exceptions that remain are a small share of volume and require the most experienced people. Departments shrink at the bottom and keep the top, which is a worse ladder rather than a stable one.
- Records:
  - 2025-05-01 · Labour impact · IBM reported its AskHR agent containing 94% of common HR questions across more than 80 automated HR tasks, with support tickets down 75% since 2016 and HR operating costs down 40% over four years — https://flyvolo.ai/en/changes/ev-20250501-hr-recruiter-3 (source: https://www.ibm.com/case-studies/ibm-askhr)

### Deciding whom to hire

- Direction: Still human-led
- Basis: evidenced (verified records attached)
- Why: Hiring decisions carry legal, cultural and financial consequences that organisations have consistently declined to delegate, and the regulatory direction reinforces that. Tools structure the process and surface evidence; the accountable judgement stays with people.
- What this does NOT establish: The decision stays human while everything feeding it — sourcing, screening, scheduling, note-taking — does not. Protecting the final call protects one hour in a process that used to take twenty.

### Handling difficult situations

- Direction: Still human-led
- Basis: evidenced (verified records attached)
- Why: These situations are emotionally charged, legally sensitive and specific to the people and history involved. They are also the moments that define whether employees trust the function. There is no credible automation path, and demand for people who handle them well is stable or rising. For platform work, EU law now requires that any decision to suspend or end someone's contract or account be taken by a human being.
- What this does NOT establish: Demand being stable is not the same as demand growing. This is a specialist function inside HR; the recruiting and administration roles that made up the headcount are elsewhere.

### Redesigning jobs around automation

- Direction: New task
- Basis: evidenced (verified records attached)
- Why: Every organisation adopting automation faces the question of what happens to the people, and it lands on HR. Skills mapping, internal mobility and redeployment planning are becoming a distinct, senior workstream — and it is, incidentally, the same task this site does for individuals. At DBS it is now a named programme: the bank says it has upskilled over 11,000 employees in roles reshaped by AI and set up a service of more than 100 internal career advisors.
- What this does NOT establish: It is project work that peaks during a transition and subsides. Building a career on helping other people through redundancy has an obvious ceiling.
