This is not a probability of losing a job.

## Scope

Written for reporters and editors at news organisations and digital outlets. Broadcast presenting, photojournalism and wire-service commodity reporting face distinct pressures; the economic pressure on the industry predates and exceeds the technological one.

## Tasks

### Rewriting press releases and results

- Direction: Automating
- Basis: evidenced (verified records attached)
- Why: Templated generation from structured data has been in newsrooms for a decade and language models made the unstructured cases tractable too. The input is already public and the output has little judgement in it, so the cost of automating is low and the loss of quality is small.
- What this does NOT establish: This was often what junior reporters did while learning the beat. Removing it removes a training ground, not just a cost.

### Getting people to tell you things

- Direction: Still human-led
- Basis: evidenced (verified records attached)
- Why: Sources take risks for a person they trust, not for an outlet and certainly not for a system. The information that matters most is the information someone does not want published, and extracting it is a human relationship task with no plausible automation path. Newsrooms write this into their rules: the Associated Press treats anything a generative tool produces as unvetted source material that its journalists must check against its sourcing standards. WIRED's retraction of a fabricated freelance story shows why — two AI detectors judged it human-written, and people checking the details caught it.
- What this does NOT establish: Relationships protect the reporter who already has them. They do nothing for the entry-level jobs where those relationships used to be built, and those are the jobs the industry cut first.

### Verifying claims and material

- Direction: Being augmented
- Basis: evidenced (verified records attached)
- Why: Tools for reverse image search, metadata analysis and cross-referencing are much better and are genuinely used. At the same time synthetic media has made the job harder in absolute terms, so the net effect is more verification work, better tooled, still requiring someone to decide what counts as confirmed.
- What this does NOT establish: More verification work is not more verification jobs. It typically lands on the same reporters as an added step, and newsrooms that cannot fund a verification desk simply publish with less checking.

### Writing the piece

- Direction: Being augmented
- Basis: evidenced (verified records attached)
- Why: Drafting, tightening and headline variants are faster with assistance. The editorial decisions — what the story actually is and what the outlet is prepared to stand behind — are made by people because they are the decisions that get sued over, and because a newsroom's voice is a deliberate choice rather than an average of the web.
- What this does NOT establish: Editorial judgement sits with a shrinking number of senior people. Assistance speeds the writing of a piece without changing how many pieces an outlet can fund.

### Detecting synthetic and manipulated media

- Direction: New task
- Basis: evidenced (verified records attached)
- Why: Generative media created a category of work that barely existed before: newsrooms now have to assume a plausible-looking artefact may be fabricated. Specialist verification desks are appearing — the BBC brought about 60 journalists into BBC Verify, citing manipulated video and AI-driven disinformation — and the skill is scarce enough to be a genuine differentiator for reporters who have it.
- What this does NOT establish: Specialist desks exist at large outlets and essentially nowhere else. For most journalists this is a skill that makes them more employable, not a job that exists to be applied for.
