This is not a probability of losing a job.

## Scope

Written for the checkout itself — scanning, payment, the queue. Selling on a shop floor is a separate occupation on this site with a much lower exposure, and many people do both in the same shift, which is exactly why the two are kept apart here: the exposure of a shift is not the exposure of either task. Specialist counters requiring product expertise and small independent shops differ again.

## Tasks

### Scanning and taking payment

- Direction: Automating
- Basis: evidenced (verified records attached)
- Why: Self-checkout, scan-as-you-shop and checkout-free formats have been deployed at scale for over a decade and have reduced staffed tills in most large chains. The technology is mature and the retailers' motive — labour is their largest controllable cost — is not going away.
- What this does NOT establish: Several major retailers have pulled back self-checkout after theft and customer frustration outweighed the savings. Adoption has oscillated, which is a useful reminder that deployment is a business decision, not a technology inevitability.

  - 2026-01-27 · Deployment · Checkout-free shopping did not reach the right economics for its own stores, so the company closed its Go and Fresh stores while its checkout-free system runs in over 360 other retailers' locations — https://flyvolo.ai/en/changes/ev-20260127-retail-cashier-11 (source: https://www.aboutamazon.com/news/company-news/amazon-fresh-go-stores-closing-expanding-whole-foods)

### Restocking and shelf work

- Direction: Still human-led
- Basis: evidenced (verified records attached)
- Why: Shelf-scanning robots exist and count stock; robots that restock a mixed shelf in a live store do not exist at commercial scale, because the objects are varied, fragile and packed by someone else, and the store is full of people. This is the largest block of physical work in the role and it has proved the hardest to automate.
- What this does NOT establish: Shelf work is physically hard, low-paid and scheduled around peaks. Being the least automatable task in the shop is not the same as being a job people can build a life on.
- Records:
  - 2026-03-02 · Deployment · Walmart says about 2,300 US stores already use digital shelf labels, turning price changes that took several associates days into minutes, and expects them chain-wide within a year — https://flyvolo.ai/en/changes/ev-20260302-retail-cashier-4 (source: https://corporate.walmart.com/news/2026/03/02/how-the-shelf-got-smarter-and-our-jobs-got-easier)

### Helping customers

- Direction: Still human-led
- Basis: evidenced (verified records attached)
- Why: In-store help is physical and immediate, and it is the reason a physical shop beats a website for many purchases. Retailers that cut floor staff to fund self-checkout have measured the effect on satisfaction and sales, and several have reversed course; the person on the floor is part of the product.
- What this does NOT establish: Retailers measuring the effect on satisfaction and reversing course is one set of retailers. Others measured the same thing and kept the savings, and the site has evidence of both.

  - 2025-06-24 · Deployment · Walmart gave store associates a real-time translation tool in 44 languages for conversations with customers, alongside an assistant used by over 900,000 associates a week — https://flyvolo.ai/en/changes/ev-20250624-retail-cashier-5 (source: https://corporate.walmart.com/news/2025/06/24/walmart-unveils-new-ai-powered-tools-to-empower-1-5-million-associates)

### Loss prevention and the difficult customer

- Direction: Still human-led
- Basis: evidenced (verified records attached)
- Why: Self-checkout shifted work from scanning to supervising, and the supervising is harder: it is about judgement, confrontation and safety. Cameras and analytics flag; a person decides what to do about it, in a situation that can become dangerous.
- What this does NOT establish: This task grew because self-checkout created the theft it now polices. It is work generated by an automation decision, and it is more dangerous and no better paid than the work it replaced.
- Records:

### Picking online orders in store

- Direction: New task
- Basis: evidenced (verified records attached)
- Why: Online grocery and click-and-collect turned stores into fulfilment centres, and picking is now a large share of hours in many supermarkets. It is new work created by the same digital shift that reduced tills, and it is physical work in a live store that automation has not reached.
- What this does NOT establish: In-store picking exists because delivery economics have not been solved, not because the work is valuable. Kroger closed three automated fulfilment centres that missed expectations and went back to its stores, while other grocers keep opening them where volume justifies it; which way this settles is not established here.
- Records:
  - 2026-01-31 · Deployment · Kroger closed three automated online-order fulfilment centres that missed expectations, took a $2.5 billion charge, and will fulfil online orders from its stores and third parties — https://flyvolo.ai/en/changes/ev-20260131-retail-cashier-6 (source: https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/56873/000110465926037723/kr-20260131x10k.htm)
  - 2026-01-31 · Deployment · Target says its stores fulfilled 97.6% of merchandise sales in 2025, including two-thirds of digital sales through same-day options such as order pickup and drive up — https://flyvolo.ai/en/changes/ev-20260131-retail-cashier-7 (source: https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/27419/000002741926000016/tgt-20260131.htm)
