This is not a probability of losing a job.

## Scope

Written for editors in marketing, social, corporate and online content production. Long-form film and television editing, colour grading and VFX specialists face different pressure and slower change.

## Tasks

### Logging footage and assembling a rough cut

- Direction: Automating
- Basis: evidenced (verified records attached)
- Why: Transcription, scene detection, speaker identification and text-based editing are built into the major editing suites, and a rough cut assembled from a transcript is now a few minutes' work. This was the largest block of hours in most edits and the one editors least enjoyed.
- What this does NOT establish: This was the block of hours that junior editors were paid for while learning the judgement in the next task. Its disappearance is a training problem as much as an hours problem.

### Versions, formats and captions

- Direction: Automating
- Basis: evidenced (verified records attached)
- Why: Auto-reframing, auto-captioning and template-based versioning have removed much of the labour here, and platforms and broadcasters now cut short versions from long footage automatically — though automatic captions still generally need a person's edit to be accurate, and one large broadcaster kept the same number of editors while its AI multiplied the versions. It was billable volume for freelancers and much of it has gone.
- What this does NOT establish: Freelancers priced by deliverable, and versioning multiplied deliverables. Losing it removes a volume business, which hurts most at the bottom of the market.

### Finding the story and the rhythm

- Direction: Still human-led
- Basis: inferred (VOLO's reasoning, no attached source)
- Why: This is taste applied under constraint, and it is what separates an edit that works from one that is merely assembled. Tools propose cuts; the judgement about whether a cut lands with this audience for this purpose is still made by a person watching it, and the market for people who reliably make that call well has not shrunk.
- What this does NOT establish: The market for people who make this call well has not shrunk — but it was always small, and it is now the only door. Everyone displaced from assembly is trying to walk through it.

### Reading and managing the client

- Direction: Still human-led
- Basis: inferred (VOLO's reasoning, no attached source)
- Why: Editing for someone else is a negotiation about intent, and most of the difficulty is in the relationship rather than the timeline. Clients who can now generate their own rough versions have more opinions, not fewer, which makes this task larger.
- What this does NOT establish: Clients who can generate rough versions themselves also anchor on them, which makes this task larger and more frustrating without making it better paid.

### Directing generated footage

- Direction: New task
- Basis: evidenced (verified records attached)
- Why: Video generation moved from novelty to production use for b-roll and fixes within a couple of years. Someone has to direct it, judge it and integrate it, and editors are better placed than anyone else because they already understand continuity, coverage and what a shot needs to do.
- What this does NOT establish: Disclosure rules, client policies and audience trust constrain where generated footage may be used, and the constraints differ sharply between advertising, corporate and journalistic work.
