## Scope

Great Britain. The regulations say any person carrying out work on gas pipework or fittings who knows or suspects that a gas appliance cannot be used without danger shall forthwith take all reasonably practicable steps to inform the responsible person for the premises (the occupier, the owner or anyone with authority over the fittings) and, where different, the owner of the appliance. In force since 3 October 1998 and not amended since. Gas work only, which many but not all plumbers do, and only when there is danger.

## What this means

In Great Britain, telling a household that its appliance is dangerous is a legal duty of the person on the job.

## What it does not show yet

Gas work and danger only; it says nothing about explaining options or prices.

## How to verify it yourself

Open regulation 34 of the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 and find "shall forthwith take all reasonably practicable steps to inform the responsible person".
