## Scope

United States, hospitals in Medicare and Medicaid. The condition of participation says anaesthesia policies must delineate pre- and post-anaesthesia responsibilities, and that each patient must have a preanaesthesia evaluation completed and documented by an individual qualified to administer anaesthesia within 48 hours before the procedure, and a postanaesthesia evaluation completed and documented by such an individual no later than 48 hours after it; qualified individuals are anaesthesiologists, other physicians, certain dentists and podiatrists, nurse anaesthetists and anaesthesiologist assistants. Last amended effective 1 January 2008. It does not say who manages pain day to day or bar software that prepares inputs.

## Source

## What this means

In US hospitals, assessing a patient before and after anaesthesia is legally a qualified clinician's job.

## What it does not show yet

It names who signs the evaluations, not who manages pain day to day.

## How to verify it yourself

Open 42 CFR 482.52 on eCFR and find "A preanesthesia evaluation completed and documented by an individual qualified to administer anesthesia".
