## Scope

California, United States. The statute says a medical assistant may administer medication only by intradermal, subcutaneous or intramuscular injection, and perform skin tests and other technical supportive services, upon the specific authorisation and supervision of a licensed physician or podiatrist (or within standardised procedures, a nurse practitioner, nurse-midwife or physician assistant), with 'supervision' defined as a practitioner who shall be physically present in the treatment facility during the procedure. Current wording effective 1 January 2015. It governs which people may do the procedure; it says nothing about machines.

## What this means

In California, a medical assistant's injections happen only with an accountable practitioner on site.

## What it does not show yet

One state's rule about which people may inject; it says nothing about automated devices.

## How to verify it yourself

Open California Business and Professions Code section 2069 and find "shall be physically present in the treatment facility".
