## Scope

Florida, United States. The cosmetology statute defines cosmetology as including hair cutting, hair arranging, hair colouring, permanent waving and hair relaxing for compensation, and makes it unlawful to practise it without an active licence or to run a salon where an unlicensed person performs it; the barbering statute defines barbering as cutting, trimming, colouring and styling hair for the public 'either by hand or by mechanical appliances' and makes practising it without a licence unlawful. Sections 477.013 and 477.0265 were last amended by chapter 2021-143, effective 1 July 2021; read in the 2026 edition. One state's licensing law; it says nothing about what machines can do, or about consultation or the front desk.

## What this means

In Florida, a paid haircut or colour must be done by a licensed person, and the barbering law covers work done with mechanical appliances too.

## What it does not show yet

One state's licensing law; it does not measure whether machines could do the work.

## How to verify it yourself

Open Florida Statutes section 477.0265 and find "without an active license as a cosmetologist".
