# The UK regulator requires every registered radiographer to be able to care for patients through imaging and interventional procedures and to respond to reactions to the drugs used

## Scope

United Kingdom. The standards say what radiographers must be able to do at the point of registration, and include providing appropriate care for service users and their carers before, during and after imaging examinations, minimally invasive interventional procedures and contrast agent examinations; recognising and responding to adverse or abnormal reactions to medications used in the profession; and identifying anxiety and stress in service users and adapting practice to support them. The page says these standards are effective from 1 September 2023 and gives no separate publication date. It is a competence standard for registration: it makes looking after the patient part of what a registered radiographer must be able to do, but it does not say a machine may not do any part of it, and it measures nothing.

## What this means

In the UK, caring for the patient through the exam and handling a drug reaction is part of what a radiographer must be able to do to be registered.

## What it does not show yet

It is a competence standard; it does not bar tools from any part of the exam.

## How to verify it yourself

Open the HCPC's standards of proficiency for radiographers and find "recognise and respond to adverse or abnormal reactions to medications".
