## Scope

United Kingdom. The exam boards' guidance to heads of centre, teachers and assessors says that where centres permit AI tools to mark student work, an AI tool cannot be the sole marker; a human assessor must review all the work in its entirety and determine the mark it warrants regardless of the AI's output, and remains responsible for the mark or grade; its appendix states that teachers must not use AI as the sole means of marking candidates' work. It covers assessed work for regulated qualifications, not everyday homework, and allows AI as an aid.

## What this means

For marked coursework in the UK, AI may help but a teacher must read everything and own the mark.

## What it does not show yet

Assessed coursework only; everyday classroom marking is not covered.

## How to verify it yourself

Open the JCQ guidance 'AI Use in Assessments' and find "an AI tool cannot be the sole marker".
