## Scope

One magazine. The publication's own account says it published the story on 7 May 2025; that when an editor became suspicious, two third-party AI-detection tools said the copy was likely human-generated; that closer examination of the story's details and further correspondence with the writer made clear it was an AI fabrication; and that the story had not gone through a proper fact-check or a senior edit. A failure in real use, caught by people checking details, not by tools; one case.

## What this means

A fabricated story with invented details got into a major magazine; checking where facts come from, by people, is what caught it.

## What it does not show yet

One case at one outlet; it does not show how often this happens or whether tools can help sourcing.

## How to verify it yourself

Open WIRED's 'How WIRED Got Rolled by an AI Freelancer' and find "did not go through a proper fact-check process".
