## Scope

One car maker, production planning for new models. BMW says it must verify for every launch that a new product fits the production line without colliding with its surroundings; in its Virtual Factory this collision check is digital and automated, using construction data and 3D scans, and takes three days to simulate where real testing took almost four weeks, with a real body guided by hand through the lines over several weekends. It says production planners scale these applications in digital twins of over 30 sites, and that more than 40 new or updated vehicles will be integrated into production virtually first by 2027. The check is simulation in a digital twin, not AI making decisions; the projected cost saving in the release is a projection and is not recorded here.

## What this means

Checking that a new design fits an existing line, once weeks of hands-on trials, is now a computed check at one large manufacturer; people still plan the line and decide what changes.

## What it does not show yet

One manufacturer's own account; it names production planners rather than mechanical engineers, and says nothing about staffing or about integrating new machinery.

## How to verify it yourself

Open the BMW Group PressClub release 'BMW Group scales Virtual Factory' and find "this collision check is digital, automated and fast".
