## Scope

England, one hospital trust. The trust's own policy says clinical coding personnel must be accredited as competent in national coding standards; that coding staff are required by contract to attain the national clinical coding qualification within about two years, and experienced staff must attend a refresher course every three years; and that every coded specialty is audited on a rolling monthly basis using the national methodology, with an annual external audit. An employer's binding rule for its own staff; it says nothing about coding software or US payer denials.

## What this means

At one NHS trust, keeping up with the coding rules is a contractual duty of the coder, and checking the coding is done by people every month.

## What it does not show yet

One employer's policy; it says nothing about software or about appeals against denied claims.

## How to verify it yourself

Open the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust's Clinical Coding Policy (OP92) and find "must be accredited as competent in the knowledge and use of national standards for coding".
