# US telephone call-centre employment fell from 385,100 in November 2022 to 277,500 in June 2026, a decline of 28% — but it had already fallen 17% in the 41 months before that

## Scope

US payroll employment in the telephone call-centre industry, a monthly series designed for comparison over time, unlike the OEWS occupational survey. Industry, not occupation: many customer service representatives work in banks, retailers and airlines rather than in call centres, and are not in this series. The pre-2022 decline runs at about 5.3% a year and the post-2022 decline at about 8.7% a year, so the trend predates generative AI — offshoring, self-service and IVR were already shrinking it — and the question this series answers is whether the rate changed, not whether AI started it.

## What this means

This is the same direction as the payroll-microdata finding, measured a different way: total industry headcount, not entry-level hiring. The instructive number is not the 28% but the change in slope — about 5.3% a year before November 2022 and about 8.7% after. Something that was already shrinking started shrinking faster, and that is a smaller, more defensible claim than a before-and-after level comparison.

## What it does not show yet

A slope change is not attribution. The same three and a half years contain a post-pandemic hiring correction, continued offshoring and the maturing of self-service channels that have nothing to do with generative AI. It is also an industry series: a representative moved from a call centre onto a retailer's own payroll leaves this series without leaving the occupation.

## How to verify it yourself

Pull the same series yourself — it is public and free at the BLS site — and look at the monthly points either side of late 2022 rather than the endpoints. If the bend you see is gradual rather than a step, that is an acceleration of an old trend, which is what the numbers here say.
