## Scope

US payroll employment in the warehousing and storage industry, a monthly series designed for comparison over time. Employment went from 1,224,900 in June 2019 to 1,880,800 in November 2022, then to 1,845,800 in June 2026 — a fall of under 2% over three and a half years. The plateau is confounded: post-pandemic e-commerce normalisation would flatten this series with or without robots. It is industry-wide and says nothing about any single operator, and a flat total is consistent with headcount falling at automated sites and rising elsewhere.

## What this means

Set against this occupation's two deployment records — a millionth robot, a touch-sensing picker — the employment line refuses the obvious inference. Over three and a half years in which the fleets scaled, industry headcount moved by under 2%. The series cannot say what the robots absorbed: a flat total is consistent with headcount falling at automated sites and rising elsewhere.

## What it does not show yet

A flat total is not evidence that nothing happened to anyone. It is consistent with headcount falling at the most automated sites and rising at newer, less automated ones, and the series cannot separate them. The plateau is also confounded: e-commerce growth normalised after 2022, which would flatten this line with no robots at all.

## How to verify it yourself

If you work in one, compare the headcount at your own building this peak season with two peaks ago, and ask whether the site opened after 2022 or before. The industry average hides the split between new automated buildings and older ones, and your building is on one side of it.
