Turns a client's need and a site's constraints into a building that can be approved, built and lived in — and signs for it.
This is not a probability of losing your job. It combines how much of the role's task load is exposed to automation with how far adoption has actually gone — useful for comparing occupations on one consistent basis, and for nothing else.
Written for architects and architectural designers in practices doing residential, commercial and public buildings. Interior design, landscape and pure visualisation studios differ; visualisation is far more exposed.

Image generation from a massing model or a sketch is now fast and convincing, and practices that outsourced rendering are bringing it in-house as a prompt. This was a specialist sub-trade with its own studios, and it is the part of the architectural world under the most direct pressure.

Building-information tools already generate much of the documentation from the model, and code-checking and clash detection are automating further. Generative tools produce many plausible massings quickly, which is useful for exploring options. Choosing between them requires knowing the client, the neighbours, the planning officer and the budget — context that is not in the prompt — and the responsibility for the choice is the architect's. Having options was never the scarce thing; knowing which one is right was.
Approvals and coordinating the team

Approvals are negotiations with authorities and communities, and coordination is a people-management task under commercial pressure. Code-checking tools assist the compliance part; the persuasion and the accountability do not automate, and they are a large share of a project architect's time.
Site inspection and construction-phase decisions

Construction is physical, local and full of exceptions, and the decisions taken on site carry liability. Drones and scanning improve the record of what is there; deciding what to do about it remains the architect's, on the day, in the mud.

How it got here#
The index is not a static number. This is where it would have sat at each capability checkpoint since ChatGPT — reconstructed, and labelled as such.

CAD and BIM set a modest baseline. The one steep段 is 2023–2024 and it is narrow: rendering. Image generation absorbed a specialist sub-trade almost entirely, while the parts that carry liability — what to build, and what to do when the ground is not what the survey said — did not move.
A flat line is not a forecast of safety. It says which tasks automation has reached so far — the occupations that moved least here are the ones where the constraint is physical or regulatory, and both of those can change.

If your image of the profession is making beautiful pictures, that part is being automated and was never most of the job anyway. The job is judgement about people, places and money, plus responsibility for a physical object, and none of that is under threat. What is changing for juniors is that rendering and drafting — the traditional first years — take fewer hours, so you will be expected to reach coordination and site work sooner. The profession's long training and modest early pay are the real considerations.
Your exposure is in the production side of your practice, and it is an opportunity as much as a risk: rendering and documentation hours falling changes the fee structure and the ratio of juniors you need. The practices that do well will be the ones that sell judgement, approvals and delivery, and that redeploy the saved production time into more projects rather than lower fees.

Get to the site and the client faster
The tasks that stay human — brief, approvals, coordination, site — are also the ones that make an architect senior. The change compresses the drafting years in between.
Practices still ration client and site exposure by seniority, and registration has its own timeline.
Ask to attend the next planning meeting or site visit as an observer. Count how much of it was about drawings and how much about people and money.
Own the practice's tools and standards
Someone decides how the practice uses generation and automated documentation, and sets the checking standard. That person shapes the practice's output quality.
Easily seen as an IT role unless tied to liability and quality; the tools change faster than practice standards do.
Take one generated set of drawings or images and log every error a contractor or planner would catch. That log is the practice's checking standard in draft.
Client-side or development roles
Developers, institutions and public bodies need people who understand buildings, approvals and cost to commission and manage projects. It uses everything an architect knows and pays better than practice.
You stop designing. Some architects find that intolerable; others find it a relief.
Ask a client-side project manager what they wish the architects they hire understood. If your answer is 'I already do', that is your route.
Common questions#
The automation question is not the reason to hesitate. Image generation is taking the rendering work and automated documentation is compressing the drafting years, but the responsibility for a building, the negotiation with authorities and the judgement about what to build have not moved and are not going to. The real questions about architecture are the ones that were always there: years of training, low early pay relative to comparable professions, and a workload culture many practices have not fixed. Weigh those honestly; on the automation axis the profession is relatively well protected.
