Financial analyst
Builds the model, writes the memo, and tells someone with money what the numbers mean before they commit it.
Write down three assumptions in your current model that you would defend against your manager, with the reason. If you cannot find three, that is the gap to close.
This is not a probability of losing your job. It combines how much of the role's task load is exposed to automation with how far adoption has actually gone — useful for comparing occupations on one consistent basis, and for nothing else.
Written for corporate FP&A, investment banking and equity research analysts at junior to mid level. Portfolio managers, traders and quantitative researchers face different dynamics.
What is actually changing#
The unit of analysis is the task, not the job title. A role is not replaced — its task mix shifts.
Each tile is one task. Its size is how much of the job it is; its colour is where the task is heading. Click a tile to see what the judgement does not establish.
Structure design is the interesting hour in a week of updating. Automating the update removes the hours that justified the headcount, while leaving the hour that justifies the title.
The summaries are only as good as the reader's ability to notice what was left out. Juniors who never read a full filing lose the instinct for what a summary hides.
Assumption-setting is the senior half of the job by definition. Analysts are not hired into it; they arrive after years of the modelling work that is being compressed.
The meeting in which capital is committed happens a few times a quarter. It protects the seat at the table, not the work that filled the rest of the calendar.
Explicitly peripheral by weight, and typically absorbed by one person on a team as an extra. It is not a job posting.

A job title is a bundle of tasks bought together, and no two people hold the same bundle. Nothing is sent anywhere — it stays in this browser.

Recent changes#
A vendor product announcement, not a report of use inside a bank. The named firms were design partners, which is input to the product rather than deployment in their analyst teams. Recorded as capability, which by this site's rules never moves an assessment on its own.
A demo, benchmark or paper shows the task can be done. Updates what the technology can do — not what employers will do.
One US investment bank; a firmwide general-purpose assistant with versions for bankers, research analysts and wealth staff, announced in a memo by CIO Marco Argenti. Reported from the internal memo (Reuters first); no headcount statement.
An employer has put it into production. Can move the baseline — weighted by scale and how similar the setting is.
Nine task categories from information retrieval to financial modelling, authored with experts from banks, hedge funds and private equity; the agents were given Google Search and EDGAR access. Public-filing research only — not an analyst working inside their own firm's models and internal data.
Failure, rollback, regulation or cost is suppressing adoption. Can lower an assessment or widen its uncertainty.
A regulator's circular to licensed firms. It notes firms using AI language models to summarise information, generate research reports and identify investment signals; it considers using them to provide investment recommendations, advice or research to investors or clients a high-risk use case; for such uses it expects model validation and ongoing monitoring, and a human in the loop to review the output for factual accuracy before relaying it to the user; it treats customising, training and calibrating a model as model development needing governance; and it says firms remain accountable for their output regardless of the mitigation adopted. The circular's verb is 'should', presented as requirements; the human checks facts, not the investment judgement.

A bank announcing a tool for its own staff. AskResearchGPT, built with OpenAI, serves investment banking, sales and trading and research staff, searching and summarising the firm's research — more than 70,000 proprietary reports a year — and pairs with a workflow that gives staff a single-click option to transfer findings into an email draft ready to be modified and customised before sharing with clients, with links to the underlying research. It gives no user counts or measured effect, and it is the company's own announcement of a partnership.
An employer has put it into production. Can move the baseline — weighted by scale and how similar the setting is.
A federal securities rule binding broker-dealers. A firm that publishes a research report prepared by a research analyst to US persons shall include a clear and prominent certification by the research analyst that all the views expressed accurately reflect the analyst's personal views about the subject securities or issuers, with a statement about compensation; the release makes clear that any natural person primarily responsible for the content of a report is a research analyst. It predates AI and governs published equity research, not corporate FP&A; it ties the views to a named person rather than forbidding tools.

What this means for you#
The first-year job was largely gathering, formatting and summarising, and that is what is being cut, so fewer analyst seats and a steeper first year are realistic. The judgement work is intact and still requires learning by doing. Get to assumptions and to the room as fast as you can: ask to present, ask to defend a number, and read the full filing even when the summary exists — that is where the instinct comes from.
Your leverage model — juniors doing the gathering while you do the thinking — is what is changing. Expect smaller teams and more of the mechanical work landing back on you, done with tools. Your value is in the assumptions you can defend and the decision-makers who trust your calls; protect the time for both, and take ownership of what the tools may and may not do in your team.
Your options#
Four directions, each with its real constraints and one thing you can test this week. Continuing as you are is a legitimate choice — it just has to be a chosen one.
Get to judgement faster
The parts of the role that remain are the ones that were always the destination. The change removes the slow apprenticeship in between, which is a loss for training but an opportunity for anyone who can demonstrate judgement early.
Judgement without track record is hard to sell. You need a few visible calls that turned out right.
Write down three assumptions in your current model that you would defend against your manager, with the reason. If you cannot find three, that is the gap to close.
Move to the operating side
Operating companies want people who can read numbers and make decisions in strategy, corporate development and operations finance. The analytical skill transfers; the decisions become yours rather than a client's.
Usually lower pay than banking at junior levels, and progress depends on the company rather than a defined ladder.
Ask one person in corporate development what decision they influenced last quarter and how. Compare that to what your own work influenced.
Become the team's tool owner
Someone will decide which assistants the team uses and audit their output. Doing it well protects everyone's work and makes you hard to remove.
Unglamorous, and easily seen as IT rather than finance unless you tie it to the quality of the analysis.
Run one recent model update through an assistant, log every error it made, and time how long checking took versus doing it by hand. That log is the start of your team's tool policy.
Common questions#
If the reason is the analytical judgement, the deal or coverage exposure and the network, yes — those are intact. If the reason is that it was a well-defined ladder where two years of grinding on models and summaries reliably bought a next step, be careful: the grinding is the part being automated, the ladder has fewer rungs, and the first year rewards people who can already think rather than people who can work long hours on formatting.
The signal is how your week is divided. When gathering data and summarising filings stops taking most of it, the hours that justified the headcount have gone even though the title has not. Log a week in two buckets — gathering versus judging — and compare it with a year ago.
Gathering data and summarising filings — the task marked automating, and the one that filled the analyst's early years. Choosing the assumptions is not, but that is the senior half of the job by definition; analysts arrive there after years of the work being compressed.
Yes, but understand what you are building it for. Assistants draft formulas and reconcile inputs; what they cannot do is design a structure that is right, and a wrong structure produces a confident, well-formatted wrong valuation. Build the skill for structure, not for speed — speed is no longer scarce.

What these judgements rest on#
5 of 5 task judgements on this page are backed by a verified event and 0 are platform inference, each labelled where it appears. Behind them sit 2 technology dimensions, a reconstructed trajectory since language models reached the public, and 6 verified events.

Other roles in the same function#
A company divides its work into functions before it divides it into jobs. These sit in Finance alongside this one — a fact about org charts, not a judgement that they are similar or that they are changing in the same direction.
