Bank teller
Handles the transactions and the people at a branch counter — and is the bank's face for customers who need a human.
Write down the last three suspicious situations you handled and what tipped you off. Take the page to your bank's fraud team and ask what they would have wanted to know.
This is not a probability of losing your job. It combines how much of the role's task load is exposed to automation with how far adoption has actually gone — useful for comparing occupations on one consistent basis, and for nothing else.
Written for branch tellers and customer service staff at retail banks in markets where digital banking is mainstream. Markets with low digital adoption, and relationship or business bankers, differ.
What is actually changing#
The unit of analysis is the task, not the job title. A role is not replaced — its task mix shifts.
Each tile is one task. Its size is how much of the job it is; its colour is where the task is heading. Click a tile to see what the judgement does not establish.
The contraction has been gradual and uneven, and several banks have reversed branch closures after losing customers. Automation of transactions did not eliminate the role; it changed the mix of who comes to the counter and why.
Regulators expecting branches to play this role depends on branches existing. Where networks close, the expectation migrates to phone and app channels rather than protecting the counter.
Exceptions are a rising share of what walks in the door because the routine left, not because there are more exceptions. A branch serving only exceptions serves far fewer people and needs far fewer staff.
Referral targets make the role measurable, which cuts both ways: a counter that does not hit them is easier to close. This task ties the job to a sales number rather than to a service need.
The task is explicitly about teaching customers to need the branch less. It is stable only for as long as there is a cohort that has not made the transition, and that cohort shrinks every year.
Is this your job? Say so and this page narrows to your share of it.
A job title is a bundle of tasks bought together, and no two people hold the same bundle. Nothing is sent anywhere — it stays in this browser.

Recent changes#
United States only — the UK and much of Europe are still closing branches at pace, which is why this record sits alongside the Lloyds closures rather than replacing them. The underlying counts are FDIC and NCUA statistics; the framing is not. The author is president of Bancography, a branch-network planning firm, so the interested party here is arguing that branches matter. Branch counts are also not teller counts: a branch can reopen with half the staff it had.
Failure, rollback, regulation or cost is suppressing adoption. Can lower an assessment or widen its uncertainty.
Mainland China, counted from the regulator's own financial-licence register. The net fall is dominated by consolidation rather than digitisation: rural credit cooperatives shed about 2,200 branches, village banks nearly 1,000 and rural cooperative banks nearly 100, driven by provincial rural-bank restructuring and the merger of small institutions. More than 8,400 new branches were still approved in the same year, so the branch network is being redistributed, not simply shrunk.

Netherlands. The bank's annual report says it has more than 200 Help with Banking advisers who support clients facing challenges using its services, and that they provided support on 174,000 occasions in 2025, up from 135,000 in 2024. Year to 31 December 2025. It does not break down how much of this is app onboarding or where the advisers sit, and the counts are the bank's own.

UK retail banking (Lloyds, Halifax, Bank of Scotland). Affected staff were offered other roles: a change in where and what branch staff do, not announced redundancies.

Singapore. The bank's own release says it would move half its tellers into digital or advisory roles within two years, with redeployed tellers becoming branch digital ambassadors, service executives or advisers; that its digital ambassadors had converted 30 per cent of seniors at one branch to digital banking since December 2017; and that when a customer needs a transaction approved at a machine, a notification goes to the ambassador's tablet and the ambassador approaches the customer, quickly verifies their identity and approves the transaction. One bank in 2018; the 30 per cent is one branch, and it does not say whether the roles still exist.
An employer has put it into production. Can move the baseline — weighted by scale and how similar the setting is.
What this means for you#
This is not a growth occupation and it has not been for thirty years; enter it knowing that. What it still offers is a regulated, trained entry into financial services, and the branch role that remains is about people in difficult situations rather than counting cash. If you take it, treat it as a two-to-three-year entry into advice, fraud prevention or operations, and make the move deliberately.
Your branch's future depends on your bank's strategy, not on technology in general — some banks are closing branches, some are re-investing in them as advice centres. The skills that transfer are fraud recognition, handling vulnerable customers and regulated conversations, and all three are in demand in contact centres, fraud teams and advice roles. Find out which way your bank is going before it tells you.
Your options#
Four directions, each with its real constraints and one thing you can test this week. Continuing as you are is a legitimate choice — it just has to be a chosen one.
Fraud prevention and financial crime
Tellers see scams in progress and learn to recognise them; fraud and financial-crime teams are growing at every bank and value exactly that instinct.
Often requires a certification, shift patterns in monitoring roles, and comfort with case systems rather than people all day.
Write down the last three suspicious situations you handled and what tipped you off. Take the page to your bank's fraud team and ask what they would have wanted to know.
Regulated advice roles
Mortgage, savings and protection advisers are what banks are repositioning branches around. Tellers who already have the customer conversations are the natural candidates.
Qualifications take months of study, and the role carries sales targets that some people find corrosive.
Ask an adviser at your branch to let you observe two appointments. Decide afterwards whether the target culture is one you can live in.
Customer-facing roles in other regulated sectors
Insurance, utilities, telecoms and public services all need people who can handle identity checks, difficult conversations and compliance under pressure. The transfer is direct and often pays comparably.
Some of these sectors are automating their own front lines just as fast; check the specific role, not the industry.
Find three job postings in other sectors that list 'vulnerable customer' or 'complaints' experience. Those are the ones that value what a teller knows.
Common questions#
Because the customers who still walk in are the ones the online channel serves worst: people in bereavement or financial difficulty, people who cannot use or trust the app, and people being scammed in real time. Handling them is regulated, emotionally demanding and physically located, and in the US branch openings in 2025 came close to matching closures. The counter has become an exception-handling desk rather than a transaction desk, and the job has changed with it — fewer positions, but more of each position spent on things that need a person.
The signal for this job is not a technology announcement, it is your bank's branch count. Look up how many branches your employer closed in the last three years and the target in its last investor presentation. That number decides this job, and it is published.
Routine transactions — and most of that shift happened before language models existed, through ATMs, online banking and the phone. What is left at the counter is the complicated and the frightened, which is genuinely harder to automate and also serves far fewer people per day.
In some markets branches are being repositioned around advice, fraud intervention and vulnerable customers rather than transactions, and some banks now staff that role explicitly. That is a change of purpose, not a reversal of the closures — the same bank usually does both at once.

What these judgements rest on#
5 of 5 task judgements on this page are backed by a verified event and 0 are platform inference, each labelled where it appears. Behind them sit 2 technology dimensions, a reconstructed trajectory since language models reached the public, and 5 verified events.

A company divides its work into functions before it divides it into jobs. These sit in Core delivery (industry-specific) alongside this one — a fact about org charts, not a judgement that they are similar or that they are changing in the same direction.
