Electrician
Installs, tests and repairs the wiring and equipment that everything else depends on — in buildings that are never quite as drawn.
This is not a probability of losing your job. It combines how much of the role's task load is exposed to automation with how far adoption has actually gone — useful for comparing occupations on one consistent basis, and for nothing else.

Every site is different, the work is in confined and unstructured spaces, and it interacts with other trades' work in real time. No robotics programme addresses this, and the constraint is the physical world rather than any missing algorithm. Diagnostic assistants that reason from symptoms and regulations are genuinely useful for the less experienced, and smart meters and monitored installations give more data to work from. The physical investigation — opening things, testing, following the cable — is the bulk of the time and stays human.

Certification software and test instruments that write their own reports have cut the paperwork substantially, and assistants help with looking up the regulation that applies. The signature and the liability remain with a qualified person, which is a regulatory choice unlikely to change.
Quoting, scheduling and the customer

Trade-business software and assistants handle quotes, invoices and scheduling far better than the paper diary did, which matters most for the self-employed. The customer relationship and the judgement about what a job will really involve once the wall is open remain the tradesperson's.

Electrification is adding work to this trade faster than any technology removes it: every charger, heat pump and battery is an electrical installation, and grid connections, data-centre construction and building retrofits all need electricians. Shortages of qualified electricians are reported in most developed economies, and the automation wave itself — data centres, robots, sensors — is part of the demand.

The least exposed occupation we assess, and the curve says why: everything that moved is paperwork, certification and diagnostics-as-advice. Running cable through a wall that is not where the drawing says it is remains untouched by anything in development. The recent uptick is diagnostic assistants, which help the less experienced most.
A flat line is not a forecast of safety. It says which tasks automation has reached so far — the occupations that moved least here are the ones where the constraint is physical or regulatory, and both of those can change.

This is the strongest position on the site from an automation standpoint: the core work is physical, unstructured and regulated, and demand is being pushed up by the same electrification and data-centre boom that worries people in other occupations. The real costs are the apprenticeship years at lower pay and the physical toll of the work. If those are acceptable, the trade is a durable choice, and one where the tools make you faster without threatening the job.
Your exposure is close to nil and your bargaining position is improving with the shortage. The tools worth adopting are the ones that remove the paperwork and help with quoting, because that is where your unpaid hours go. The growth is in electrification specialisms — chargers, heat pumps, storage — where certification is a small investment against a long demand curve.

Add an electrification specialism
Chargers, heat pumps, solar and storage are where demand is growing fastest and installers with the right certification charge a premium.
Each certification costs money and days off the tools, and manufacturer schemes fragment the market.
Price the certification for the specialism most requested in your area and ask two certified installers whether the premium is real. Decide on the numbers.
Run the business with the tools, not the diary
Quoting, invoicing and scheduling are where self-employed tradespeople lose evenings and money. This is the one place automation clearly helps this trade.

Track for one week how many unpaid hours go to quotes and paperwork. That number is the budget you can justify spending on tools.
Industrial and building-automation work
Factories, data centres and smart buildings need electricians who also understand controls, networks and the automation they power. It is better paid and directly served by the automation trend.
Requires learning controls and networking on top of the trade, and often shift or on-call work.
Ask a controls or building-automation technician what they learned that you have not. If it sounds like a year rather than a decade, look seriously.

As safe as any occupation we assess. The core work happens in physical spaces that are never the same twice, it is regulated so a qualified person must sign for it, and demand is rising because electrification and data-centre construction are creating installations faster than the workforce is growing. What is changing is the paperwork and the quoting, which the tools make easier. The honest caveats are about the body, not the technology: it is physically demanding work with a long apprenticeship at modest pay.
