Paralegal
Does the reading, drafting and organising that lets a lawyer sign off — and is accountable for nothing being missed.
This is not a probability of losing your job. It combines how much of the role's task load is exposed to automation with how far adoption has actually gone — useful for comparing occupations on one consistent basis, and for nothing else.
Written for paralegals and legal assistants in law firms and in-house legal departments handling commercial, corporate and litigation support. Court-facing roles with procedural authority, and jurisdictions where paralegals are licensed to advise, differ.
What is actually changing#
The unit of analysis is the task, not the job title. A role is not replaced — its task mix shifts.
First-pass document review
Automating≈ Platform inferenceReading thousands of emails, contracts or disclosures to flag which ones matter for the case or the deal.
Relevance classification over large document sets is exactly the shape of problem language models handle well, and the legal industry had already adopted predictive coding for e-discovery before the current generation of models. The remaining human step is verifying the model's misses on a sample, not reading everything.
Privilege calls and anything that will be sworn to still route through a human, because the professional liability does not transfer to a vendor.
Drafting from precedent
Being augmented≈ Platform inferenceProducing the first version of a contract, filing or letter by adapting the firm's precedents to the facts.
Generating a competent first draft from a precedent bank and a fact pattern is now fast, but the value was never in the typing. It sits in knowing which precedent, which clauses the other side will fight, and what this client has agreed before — context the tool only has if someone maintained it.
Running the matter
Being augmented≈ Platform inferenceDeadlines, court rules, filings, service, who has signed what, what is still outstanding.
Practice-management software tracks the calendar, but the calendar is not the job. Knowing that a particular registry rejects filings for a formatting quirk, or that opposing counsel always asks for an extension on Fridays, is the operational knowledge that keeps matters moving, and it lives in people.
Client and witness contact
Still human-led≈ Platform inferenceGetting documents out of a reluctant client, preparing a nervous witness, explaining what happens next.
The barrier is trust and confidentiality rather than language. People disclose awkward facts to a person they have met, and a firm cannot delegate the duty of confidentiality to an interface it does not control.
Checking what the tools produced
New task✓ Evidence-backedConfirming that a cited case exists, that a summary matches the source, that a generated clause does not contradict another.
Fabricated citations in filings have already produced sanctions in several jurisdictions, and firms responded by making a human sign off on machine-assisted work. That sign-off is a new task, and it lands on the person who already checks everything else.
Whether this task is paid as skilled work or absorbed as unpaid diligence depends on the firm, and that decides whether it is an opportunity or just more load.
Which technologies matter here#
Four separate signals. They are deliberately not added together — a job exposed to two technologies is not twice as exposed.
How it got here#
The index is not a static number. This is where it would have sat at each capability checkpoint since ChatGPT — reconstructed, and labelled as such.
● 1 verified event for this occupation, plotted at the date it happened — the parts of the line near a marker are anchored to something checkable.
Predictive coding for e-discovery gave it a high baseline. The flat stretch across 2023 H2 is the visible mark of a US case in which fabricated citations reached a court filing: firms slowed adoption for anything that would be sworn to, and the pause is in the data.
A flat line is not a forecast of safety. It says which tasks automation has reached so far — the occupations that moved least here are the ones where the constraint is physical or regulatory, and both of those can change.
Recent changes#
US federal court (S.D.N.Y., Judge Castel). The sanction rested on failing to verify and on standing by the citations once challenged. Widely cited in later professional-conduct guidance.
Failure, rollback, regulation or cost is suppressing adoption. Can lower an assessment or widen its uncertainty.

The part of the job that used to train you — reading everything — is the part that is shrinking, so the apprenticeship model is weaker than it was. Entering is still realistic, but pick a practice area where facts are messy and human (family, employment, immigration, disputes) over one built on high-volume document processing, and get close to the matter-management side early: that knowledge compounds and does not automate.
Your exposure depends on how much of your week is review-and-draft versus running matters and people. If it is mostly the former, expect the firm to want fewer of you doing more matters each; if it is the latter, you are closer to an operations role than a clerical one, and should price yourself that way. The verification task is worth claiming explicitly before it is handed to you for free.
Your options#
Four directions, each with its real constraints and one thing you can test this week. Continuing as you are is a legitimate choice — it just has to be a chosen one.
Become the matter-operations person
Firms are consolidating support roles around fewer people who run more matters. The ones kept are the ones who know how the machinery of the court and the client actually works.
Requires a practice area with real procedural complexity, and a firm that values operations rather than treating it as overhead.
Write down every filing or deadline rule you know that is not in any manual. If the list is long, that is your asset; if it is short, you are in the exposed part of the job.
Own the tools and the verification standard
Someone in every firm is going to decide which tools are used and how their output is checked. That person is rarely a partner and often the paralegal who understood the workflow best.
Needs the standing to say no to a partner about a tool, and comfort with vendor contracts and data-handling questions.
Take one machine-generated document from the last month and produce a one-page error log: what it got wrong, how you found it, how long it took. Show it to the supervising lawyer.
Compliance or contracts management in-house
Corporate legal and compliance teams need people who can read a contract, run a process and chase signatures — the same skills, applied to one company's recurring problems rather than many clients' one-off ones.
Fewer roles than in private practice, and they tend to want some industry knowledge on top of legal process.
Read five in-house contracts-manager job postings and list the requirements you cannot already show. If it is only industry vocabulary, the gap is weeks.
Qualify, if the maths works
The judgement and accountability that stay human are concentrated in the qualified role. Many paralegals are closer to that than they think, and some jurisdictions have routes that credit experience.
Years, money and exams, with income sacrificed along the way. Only worth it if you actually want the responsibility, not just the protection.
Find the exact route in your jurisdiction, total cost and years, and ask one person who did it whether they would again.
Common questions#
It is a narrower one than it was. The high-volume reading that used to be the entry work is shrinking, so fewer junior seats exist and each one is expected to do more. It still works as an entry point if you treat it as an operations and judgement apprenticeship rather than a reading job, choose a fact-heavy practice area, and make the verification of machine output visibly your responsibility early. What it is not any more is a way to be paid to learn slowly.
