Written for platform ride-hail and taxi drivers in large cities. Confidence is low and deliberately so: robotaxis are commercially deployed in a small number of cities and the picture differs by city more than any other occupation on this site.

Driving the trip

Driverless taxis carry paying passengers in several cities and are expanding city by city, which makes this the one occupation on the site where the core task is being replaced in commercial deployment rather than in pilots. The expansion is slow, expensive and geofenced, and it depends on regulators city by city, but the direction is not in doubt where it is permitted.
'Where it is permitted' is most of the story. Deployment covers a small fraction of the world's cities, excludes most weather and road conditions, and has been paused or withdrawn after incidents. Ten years of forecasts have consistently been too fast; treat any timeline, including implied ones, with suspicion.

Robotaxi operators handle these through remote assistance and rules about who may ride, which works for the median trip and fails at the edges. A driver's judgement about a person in the back seat is a significant, under-counted part of the job, and it is why regulators in many places remain cautious about unattended vehicles.

These are the situations that geofences are drawn to avoid and that remote operators are hired to resolve, and they are why deployment is confined to well-mapped, well-behaved areas. In most of the world's cities they are ordinary Tuesday conditions, which is the main reason most of the world's drivers are not yet exposed.
Working the platform

The driver is a small business with one asset, and the platform sets most of the terms. Managing this is the skill that determines income today, and it is where the pressure on drivers actually comes from — pay per trip and vehicle costs, well before robotaxis arrive in most cities.
Remote assistance and fleet operations

Every robotaxi deployment employs remote assistants, fleet attendants and depot staff, and the ratio of people to vehicles is far higher than the companies' long-run ambitions. These are the jobs the technology creates directly, and they exist only where it operates.

Starts at 30 because driverless services were already carrying paying passengers in 2022 — in a handful of well-mapped cities. The curve tracks the size of those geofences, not the capability of the models, which is why it climbs so much more slowly than any office occupation despite being the one people worry about most.
A flat line is not a forecast of safety. It says which tasks automation has reached so far — the occupations that moved least here are the ones where the constraint is physical or regulatory, and both of those can change.

Whether this is a reasonable way to earn depends almost entirely on your city. In the handful of cities with commercial robotaxis, expect the market for human drivers to shrink over years, not months, starting with the easiest routes. Everywhere else, the risk is the one drivers already live with — falling pay per trip and rising vehicle costs — and the driverless question is a regulatory decision to watch, not a reason to leave today. Do not buy a vehicle on a multi-year loan against ride-hail income without checking what your city's authority has permitted.
Your exposure is city-specific and knowable: look at what is licensed where you drive, not at national headlines. The parts of the job that stay — handling people, handling the unmapped — are also the qualification for the fleet-support roles robotaxi operators hire for, and for the many transport jobs that still need a licensed, experienced driver. If your city has a deployment, position for those roles early; if not, the vehicle cost and pay-per-trip pressure remain the real problem.

Move to the fleet side where robotaxis operate
Operators need remote assistants, depot staff and fleet attendants who know the city and the passengers. Experienced drivers are the obvious hires, and early ones set the terms.
Exists only where deployments operate; usually shift-based and employed rather than flexible and self-employed.
Check which driverless operators, if any, are licensed in your city and whether they are hiring. If none are licensed, note the date and move on for now.
Licensed transport that needs a human
Patient transport, school and community transport, chauffeur work and specialist passenger services all need licensed drivers who can handle people, and none are near automation.
Usually employed with fixed hours and background checks, and pay varies widely by sector.
Look up the requirements for patient or community transport driving where you live. Most experienced drivers already meet them.
Commercial vehicle licence
Van, bus and truck roles are in shortage, pay more with employment protection, and the automation timeline for mixed urban driving is longer there than for robotaxis on mapped routes.

In your city, the answer depends on your city's regulator and on the operators' willingness to spend, and we will not pretend to a number. What can be said: driverless taxis carry paying passengers in a small number of cities and are expanding slowly, geofenced, and with pauses after incidents; in most cities nothing is licensed. Forecasts have run ahead of reality for a decade. The useful move is not to guess the year but to check what is actually permitted where you drive, and to know that the parts of the job about people and unmapped situations are also the qualification for the jobs the technology creates.
