Where this applies
Vendor-reported, inside a funding announcement — the numbers are the company's own and unaudited, and a firm counts as a customer whether ten people use it or a thousand. "Used by" is not "does the work": nothing here says what share of a document review runs through it, or that any paralegal's task list changed. It is one vendor; Harvey and several others sell into the same firms, so this understates the total and overstates this product.
What this means
Research, first-pass review and drafting from precedent are exactly the tasks a junior paralegal is hired to absorb, and they are now sold as a product into the firms that do the hiring. The practical effect shows up in how a matter is staffed: fewer people on the first pass, and the first pass arriving as something to check rather than something to produce.
What it does not yet show
No firm in this announcement says it hired fewer paralegals, and the vendor gives no figure for how much of any workflow the product actually carries. A licence count is a purchasing decision, not a measurement of work done — plenty of enterprise software is bought widely and used thinly.
What you can check
Look at your own firm's trainee and paralegal intake for this year against two years ago, and at what the first-year work actually is. If new joiners are put on checking machine output from week one instead of doing the first pass themselves, the substitution has already happened at your firm whatever the headcount says.
Does it change the assessment?
No. The impact index is never moved by a single event. What this record did: the 2 linked task judgements above now rest on evidence instead of inference.
