Where this applies
One company's own count, in a shareholder letter, with no definition of what counts as 'used' — a single generated establishing shot and a whole sequence both qualify. Netflix names three titles (Glory, Brasil 70: A Saga do Tri, The American Experiment) and three uses: enhanced crowds, historical battle sequences, worldbuilding establishing shots. The letter also makes the opposite point in the same paragraph: in some cases the shots 'would have had to be left out' without the technology, so part of this is work that did not previously exist at that budget.
What this means
Roughly 300 titles in one year at one buyer is no longer an experiment, and the letter puts the weight of it in post — the part of the pipeline an editor lives in. What it buys the production is shots that used to be a budget decision. That makes the editor's job less about whether a shot can exist and more about whether it belongs: the scarce skill moves from execution toward judging what the pipeline hands you.
What it does not yet show
Netflix does not say how many people worked on those titles, whether any post house won or lost work, or what share of any single title was generated. 'Used in' is the loosest possible measure and the company chose it. The letter is also explicit that some of this output replaced nothing — it replaced a cut shot.
What you can check
In your own work, watch which line on the budget the generated shots come out of. If they are paid for from the VFX line, the money and the headcount moved; if they come out of the editor's time because 'you can just make it', the work was absorbed rather than funded, and that is the version that shows up in your hours before it shows up in anyone's headcount. Ask the post supervisor on your next job which is happening.
