Three US metros, and the share is estimated by Yipit from email receipts across about 1.5 million consumer accounts, counting only trips that begin and end inside Waymo's operating zones — not trips, and not the whole city. The January figures were higher (16/17/19%), and Yipit notes the share can look like it is falling when Waymo expands into new areas. The wage figures are Gridwise's, and the researchers quoted said the data cannot establish that robotaxis caused the decline.
What this means
This is the clearest account on the site of why displacement in gig work is invisible until it is severe. Nobody fires a contractor. The share moves, the queue lengthens, the paid fraction of your online hours falls, and some people quietly stop coming back — and none of that appears in an employment statistic. If you drive, the number that changes first is not how many drivers there are; it is how much of your shift is paid.
What it does not yet show
Nobody has shown that robotaxis caused the wage decline; the researchers quoted said so explicitly, and the same cities saw other changes. The 15% is an estimate from receipt data in a sample, inside geofences, in three metros — it is not a national figure and not a count of trips. Uber also says more drivers are signing up organically as demand grows.
What you can check
Stop tracking your daily takings and start tracking utilisation: of the hours you were online last week, how many were on a paid trip. Do it for four weeks and compare with the same four weeks last year. That single ratio is where a robotaxi zone shows up first, months before anything appears in a headline — and it is also the number that tells you whether moving to a different part of the city is worth it.
