Assembly line worker
Performs a defined step in making a physical product, hundreds of times a shift, to a standard someone else will check.
This is not a probability of losing your job. It combines how much of the role's task load is exposed to automation with how far adoption has actually gone — useful for comparing occupations on one consistent basis, and for nothing else.

The remaining human stations are the ones where parts vary, volumes are low or the product changes too often to justify tooling.
Automation decisions here are driven by labour cost relative to capital cost, which is why the same product is assembled by robots in one country and by people in another. Wages, not capability, set the pace in most of the world.

Machine vision inspection is mature, cheaper than a person and does not get tired at hour seven, and it has displaced visual inspection stations in most modern plants. What remains for people is the judgement on borderline cases and on defects the system was not trained to see.

Every automated line needs technicians who understand both the product and the equipment, and plants consistently report shortages of them. Robot programming has become far easier — teaching by demonstration rather than code — which opens these roles to experienced operators rather than only engineers.

This is a curve driven entirely by robotics, and robotics moves in years.

Whether the line you join is automating depends more on your country's wage level and your employer's capital than on technology, so look at the specific plant. In general, the fixed repetitive stations are the ones going, and the variable, dexterous and machine-tending work is what stays. Use the job to learn the equipment: operators who understand the automation are the ones plants promote into the technician roles they cannot fill.
Your plant's direction is knowable — ask about the capital plan. If your station is fixed and repetitive, expect it to be automated when the next line refresh comes, and position for machine tending or maintenance before then. Your years of knowing how the product actually goes together are exactly what the automation engineers lack, and plants that automate well are the ones that keep their experienced operators close to the new equipment.

From operating a station to tending a cell
This is the natural evolution of the role inside the plant, and it is where the headcount goes when stations automate.
Requires basic troubleshooting skill and, usually, the plant choosing to train operators rather than hire technicians from outside.
Next time a machine near you stops, watch exactly what the person who fixes it does. Ask them to show you once. That is the start of the transition.
Maintenance technician or robot technician
Plants cannot fill these roles, they pay substantially more than operating, and teaching-by-demonstration has made robot programming learnable without an engineering degree.
A certificate or an internal programme of months, and on-call responsibility when the line goes down at night.
Ask HR whether the plant has a technician training programme and how many operators went through it last year. The number tells you whether the path is real here.
Skilled trades
Electrical, welding, machining and mechanical fitting are in shortage across manufacturing and construction, and the physical discipline of line work transfers well.
Multi-year apprenticeships at lower initial pay, and geographic moves are sometimes needed to find one.

Yes, and in many countries they are struggling to hire now. What they hire for is changing: fewer fixed repetitive stations, more machine tending, maintenance and the dexterous or variable assembly that robots still cannot do. How fast that shift happens where you are depends mostly on local wages relative to the cost of automation, not on what is technically possible. If you are in manufacturing, the durable position is next to the equipment rather than in front of it.
