This is not a probability of losing your job. It combines how much of the role's task load is exposed to automation with how far adoption has actually gone — useful for comparing occupations on one consistent basis, and for nothing else.

Automated fryers, drink stations and assembly systems are in commercial use at large chains, because fixed menus and consistent inputs are exactly what robots need. Adoption is limited by cost and by the mess of a real kitchen, but this is the one segment of cooking where deployment, not just demonstration, is happening.
Several high-profile robotic kitchen ventures have closed after failing to beat the economics of a low-wage crew. Deployment is real but narrower than the announcements suggested.

Restaurant cooking is improvisation under time pressure with variable ingredients in a physically chaotic space. Robots that cook a fixed dish exist; robots that run a Saturday night service do not, and nothing in development approaches it. This is most of the job for most chefs.

Where automation has entered quick-service kitchens it has changed the crew's tasks rather than removed the crew: someone tends the machine, and someone still cooks the items it cannot. This is a small, segment-specific change today.

Inventory, costing and ordering software set the baseline; the kitchen itself has barely moved. Robots that cook one fixed dish exist and are being deployed in fast food, which is what the recent段 reflects. Nothing in development runs a Saturday night service, and that is most of the job.
A flat line is not a forecast of safety. It says which tasks automation has reached so far — the occupations that moved least here are the ones where the constraint is physical or regulatory, and both of those can change.

If you are entering restaurant cooking, automation is not the thing that should worry you; pay, hours and the physical toll should. The quick-service segment is the one where machines are arriving, and it was never where people learned the craft anyway. Learn in a real kitchen, learn the costing side earlier than most cooks do, and the career is as durable as the industry's economics allow.
Your exposure is low unless you run a fixed-menu, high-volume operation, in which case the automation question is one of unit economics you should be modelling now. For everyone else, the tools that matter are the ones that take the ordering, costing and scheduling off your evenings. The chronic staffing shortage is the real pressure, and it works in favour of chefs who can lead a team.

Move towards leading and costing, earlier
Head chef and kitchen manager roles are the ones the industry cannot fill, and they are about people and margins as much as food.
Longer hours and responsibility for other people's mistakes, at pay that in much of the industry does not reflect either.
Ask to see this month's food-cost figures and work out which three dishes make the least margin. If you found that interesting, you are ready for the next role.
Product development or food operations
Chains, food manufacturers and delivery brands need chefs who can design dishes that scale and specify them for others — including machines — to make.
Office hours and a very different daily life; you cook less and write more.
Write one dish as a full specification — quantities, steps, tolerances — that a cook who has never seen it could reproduce. That document is the job.
Owning or running the operation
The craft is intact and the margin is in the business, not the kitchen. Chefs who learn the numbers can capture it; those who do not, work for someone who does.
Capital, risk and a failure rate the industry is famous for. Not a path to take without understanding the numbers first.
Build a one-page monthly budget for a restaurant you know: rent, wages, food cost, revenue. If the result surprises you, keep learning before you sign a lease.
Common questions#
In fast-food kitchens with fixed menus, partly, and slowly — and several well-funded attempts have already closed because a low-wage crew was cheaper. In restaurant kitchens, no: cooking to order with variable ingredients in a cramped space under time pressure is about as far from what robots do well as any work we assess. The pressures on this profession are pay, hours, staffing and the economics of restaurants. Those are real; the robots mostly are not.
