Where this applies
Wholesale and manufacturing sales representatives rank 6th by employment among the highest-exposure quintile in the paper's appendix. US private-sector payroll records from ADP, November 2022 to June 2026. The adjustment operates through reduced hiring of young workers rather than separations, and experienced workers show no comparable gap. The authors state they find no evidence of widespread, economy-wide displacement. Descriptive, not causal, and measured at occupation level rather than task level — the paper says nothing about which selling tasks moved.
What this means
The entry rungs of this job are research and quote assembly, and they are the two tasks this site marks as automating. The paper finds the contraction at exactly that end — fewer young workers hired, experienced ones unaffected — which is what it looks like when the work that used to be how you learned the job stops being worth paying a beginner to do.
What it does not yet show
It is not causal and the authors say so, and it is measured at occupation level — the paper never claims which selling tasks moved. It also covers US payrolls and a broad occupational category; a two-person sales team at an SME is not in this data at all. And the headline finding of the same paper is that there is no widespread displacement.
What you can check
Ask your own company two numbers: how many people with under two years of sales experience were hired in the last twelve months, and how many in the twelve before. A contraction at the entry end shows up as an absence of new names, not as departures — so headcount alone will hide it.
Does it change the assessment?
No. The impact index is never moved by a single event. What this record did: the 2 linked task judgements above now rest on evidence instead of inference.
