US graphic design services employment rose for seven months after ChatGPT's release to 59,300, then fell to 50,100 by December 2025 — its level at the depth of the 2020 shutdown

Where this applies
United States payroll employment at graphic design firms. It is an industry, not an occupation, and the distinction cuts hard here: a designer who moves from an agency to an in-house team at a retailer leaves this series entirely, so a shift in where design happens looks identical to design disappearing. Freelancers, who are a large share of this trade, are not payroll employees and are not counted either. The shape is worth more than the endpoints: the series went up for seven months after November 2022 and turned down from June 2023, so whatever is happening did not begin when the tools were released. The 2023–2025 period was also a broad contraction in marketing spend, which this series cannot separate from anything else. Seasonally adjusted, monthly, in thousands; the most recent months are preliminary.
What this means
The number of people employed by US graphic design firms is back where it was in April 2020, when most of the country was shut. The fall is real and it is large. What the dates rule out is the simplest story about it: the series rose for seven months after the tools arrived and only turned down in mid-2023, so whatever is pulling it down did not start on release day.
What it does not yet show
It cannot tell a designer leaving the trade from a designer moving in-house, and in-house is where a lot of this work went. It cannot see freelancers at all, and this is a trade full of them. And it cannot separate image generation from the marketing-spend contraction that ran through the same two years — two explanations, one line, and the line does not choose between them.
What you can check
If you are in this trade, ask three people you know who left an agency in the last two years where they went. Count how many went in-house, how many went freelance, and how many left design. This series counts the first two as the same thing and cannot see the third at all.
Does it change the assessment?
No. The impact index is never moved by a single event. Nor did this record change a layer: all 1 linked judgement above already rested on earlier evidence. This one adds to them.
