Tasks this bears on
Reading the routine study
High-volume, pattern-clear work: screening mammograms, chest films, follow-up scans where the question is narrow and the answer is usually normal.

Where this applies
United States, and it measures entry to training, not employment: these are positions programmes chose to fund and offer, which is a bet on demand several years out rather than a count of work being done today. The figures are the PGY-2 line for Radiology-Diagnostic in Tables 3 and 8A — 997 (2022), 1,006, 1,017, 1,057, 1,083 (2026), filled by all applicants at 99.9%, 100.0%, 99.9%, 98.6% and 98.4% — the main entry point for the specialty; the smaller PGY-1 line rose 132 to 156 over the same period. A specialty can automate part of its work and still train more people, because volume of imaging and the supply of readers move independently; this record bounds the employment story, it does not settle what machines read.
What this means
Through the five Matches that follow ChatGPT, US radiology training capacity went up, not down, and nearly every seat filled. Programmes and the funders behind them were choosing, each of those years, to pay for more radiologists starting five to six years later. Whatever they believe about AI reading images, they are not acting on a belief that fewer readers will be needed.
What it does not yet show
It does not measure how much reading machines do today, and it is not employment — a residency post is a training seat, and the person filling it starts practising years from now. It also does not rule out the change arriving as something other than headcount: more studies read per radiologist, a different mix of work, or pressure on pay. And it is one country; a system that trains centrally and pays centrally can hold a number steady for reasons that have nothing to do with technology.
What you can check
Ask a radiology trainee or programme director you can reach what changed in their department in the last three years — and listen for whether the answer is 'fewer of us' or 'the same of us, reading more'. Those two have the same headcount and are not the same future.
Does it change the assessment?
No. The impact index is never moved by a single event. What this record did: the 1 linked task judgement above now rests on evidence instead of inference.
