Where this applies
United States payroll employment at architectural services firms, which is an industry and not an occupation: it counts everyone those firms employ — drafters, technologists, interior designers, administrators — and it does not count architects working inside engineering firms, developers, contractors or government. The start month is November 2022 because that is when ChatGPT was released, not because anything happened in the industry that month. The figures are seasonally adjusted, monthly, in thousands; July 2026 is preliminary and subject to revision. Forty-five months is long enough to see a shift in hiring and too short to see one in the size of the profession, and flat employment is compatible with the work inside those firms having changed completely.
What this means
Across the entire period in which image generation went from a curiosity to a standard step, the number of people employed by US architectural practices did not move. Whatever these firms did with the tools, they did not do it by employing fewer people — and the flat line runs through the same months in which the rendering task became cheap.
What it does not yet show
A flat total hides everything underneath it. The same 204,000 can be a different mix — fewer people producing images, more people doing something else — and this series cannot see that; it also cannot see pay, hours, or how many of those jobs are the junior ones that used to be the way in. Industry is not occupation: architects working inside engineering firms, developers and government are not in this number at all, and non-architects inside these firms are.
What you can check
Pull the series yourself — it is one page on the BLS site and it updates monthly. Then look at your own studio's org chart and count how many people are junior. That second number is where this change would appear first, and no public series publishes it.
Does it change the assessment?
No. The impact index is never moved by a single event. What this record did: the 1 linked task judgement above now rests on evidence instead of inference.
