Tasks this bears on
Knowing what is actually in the back
Answering whether it exists in that size, when the next delivery lands, and which other branch has one — accurately enough that someone will wait for it.
Automating✓ Evidence-backed
Keeping the floor standing up
Replenishing, folding, tidying, moving the display, and handling the customer who is upset about something that is not your fault.

Where this applies
Total retail trade, all employees, seasonally adjusted. The long view is the finding rather than the recent months: this sector has employed roughly the same number of people for seven years, through the largest shift to online ordering in its history. That is a fact about retail employment and not about this occupation specifically — the series contains cashiers, stockroom staff, managers and delivery, and cannot separate shop-floor selling from any of them. It also cannot see the warehouse and logistics jobs that e-commerce moved into other industries, so it is not a measure of where retail work went.
What this means
Seven years of roughly flat employment through the largest shift to online ordering in the sector's history. That is the long view, and it is more useful than any recent month: retail did not empty out when the channel changed, it reorganised. The page's argument is the same shape — the errand that brought a customer over disappeared, and the advisory half did not.
What it does not yet show
It cannot separate shop-floor selling from cashiering, stockroom work or management, and it cannot see the warehouse and delivery jobs that e-commerce created in other industries. So it is not a measure of where retail work went — only that the sector's own payroll did not collapse.
What you can check
Count the floor space in your store given to collection lockers versus display, and compare with a year ago. That ratio is your store's answer, and it moves before any national number does.
Does it change the assessment?
No. The impact index is never moved by a single event. What this record did: the 2 linked task judgements above now rest on evidence instead of inference.
