Designing a question honestly

Worth more than before

Knowing what a leading question is, what a control is for, and why your intuition about a result is not evidence.

Why

The scarcest skill in any organisation that makes decisions from data — and it is scarcer now, because generation makes it trivially easy to produce a confident-sounding answer to a badly-framed question.

Separating what people say from what they do

Worth more than before

Treating self-report as data about self-report, not as data about behaviour.

Why

The single most useful thing psychology teaches that other fields routinely get wrong. It is why survey-driven decisions fail and why this training transfers so well to product and policy work.

Statistical literacy

Holding

Reading a result and knowing whether it means anything — effect size, sample, what was not measured.

Why

Tools compute the statistics; deciding whether the design supports the claim remains human. The computation was never the hard part.

Interviewing

Worth more than before

Getting an honest answer from someone who wants to give you a helpful one.

Why

Requires reading a person in real time and noticing what they are avoiding. Automated interviewing collects words; it does not notice the pause before them.

Where it can lead#

Several directions, never one. Each says what your training reuses, what graduates typically lack, the real entry conditions, and one thing you can test this term.

User research

What transfers
Almost the whole degree, applied commercially: research design, interviewing, and the say-versus-do distinction are literally the job.
What graduates typically lack
Speed and stakeholder communication. Academic research optimises for rigour over weeks; product research has to be defensible in days and legible to people who will not read the appendix.
Entry reality
One of the best-fitting paths for this degree and one of the least known to its students. Usually needs one portfolio study; a master's helps but is not required.
Test this term

Run a five-person study on one real product decision and write a two-page findings note a product manager could act on tomorrow. Note how much shorter it has to be than a coursework report.

Behavioural / applied data work

What transfers
Research design and statistical literacy, in roles where the question is whether an intervention actually worked.
What graduates typically lack
Programming — enough Python or R to work with real data at real size, not just a stats package on a clean dataset.
Entry reality
Competitive and often expects quantitative depth beyond an undergraduate psychology curriculum. The gap is real but closable in a year of deliberate work.

Take a public dataset, form one falsifiable hypothesis, test it in code, and write up what you found including what would have changed your mind.

People operations / organisational work

Understanding behaviour at the level of groups and incentives, and the discipline to check whether a policy did what it intended.
What graduates typically lack
Commercial and legal literacy. Much of this work is constrained by employment law and budget rather than by what would be effective.
Entry reality
Accessible entry, but the early roles are administrative and the trajectory depends on whether you bring evidence-thinking to them rather than absorbing the existing habits.

Pick one policy at your university — anything from grading to housing allocation — and write two pages on how you would test whether it achieves its stated goal.

The foundation, but this is a separate track: it requires postgraduate training and licensure, and the undergraduate degree is a prerequisite rather than a qualification.
What graduates typically lack
Several years of supervised postgraduate training. This is a decision about the next five years, not the next term.
Entry reality
Licensing requirements and capacity vary enormously by market, and places are limited. Verify the specific route in your jurisdiction before treating it as a plan — many students discover the constraint too late.
Test this term

Write down the exact route in your jurisdiction: which degree, how many supervised hours, how many places per year, and what it costs. Then talk to one person currently in that training.

What to add outside the classroom#

This is about what graduates commonly lack in practice — not a claim that your school failed to teach it.

One real study you ran end to end, on a question someone actually cared about. Coursework studies do not count because nobody was going to act on them.

Enough code to handle real data. This is the single largest gap between what the degree gives you and what applied roles ask for.

Writing short. Two pages that change a decision are worth more than thirty that describe a method.

Common questions#

What can I actually do with a psychology degree?

More than students are usually told, and less of it is clinical than they assume. The degree's most commercially valuable training is research design and the discipline of separating what people say from what they do — which is exactly what user research, behavioural and policy work pay for, and which is getting scarcer as generation makes confident-sounding answers cheap. Clinical practice is a real path but a separate one requiring postgraduate licensure with limited places. The honest advice is to run one real study this term, because the artefact opens more doors than the transcript.

Should I switch majors because of AI?

Psychology is among the majors least directly threatened and most often misunderstood by its own students. Its commercially valuable training is research design — separating what people say from what they do — and that feeds data, research and people-facing roles rather than only clinical ones. The risk here is vagueness about the route, not automation.

Do I need a postgraduate degree to use this?

For clinical routes, yes, and the honest thing to do is price the route this term rather than in final year — the cost and the years are the constraint students most often discover too late. For research, data and people-facing routes, no: what those employers test is whether you can design a study and defend a conclusion, which you can demonstrate as an undergraduate.

What should I have by the time I graduate?

One small study you ran end to end and a two-page write-up of what you found and what you could not conclude. The second half matters more than the first: stating the limits of your own finding is exactly the judgement that transfers to research, data and product roles, and almost no graduate arrives with evidence of it.
