Written for quayside and yard work at container terminals: crane operation, horizontal transport, lashing and the wharf operations around them. It does not cover the ship, the customs broker or the freight forwarder, and it does not cover bulk, roll-on-roll-off or general cargo terminals, where the handling problem is different and far less automated. The thing that decides everything here is whether the terminal was built for automation or converted to it, because the evidence says those are different events with different timetables — and one operator can run both a fully automated terminal and a conventional one in the same city, which is why a question about this job only has an answer at the level of a specific berth.

Moving the box between quay and yard

This is the clearest completed removal of a whole task on this site, and the operator states it flatly: at its fully automated terminal the traditional prime movers have been replaced by a fleet of driverless automated guided vehicles. Note the mechanism, because it decides everything about how this spreads. The problem was solved by building a terminal around the machine — fenced, mapped, with the traffic and the people separated — rather than by teaching a vehicle to cope with a working dock. At the same operator's older terminal next door the same vehicles are still described as operational trials, and the 2026 plan for them is deployment with safety drivers.
A task removed at one terminal is not a task removed at a port, and the same company still recruits for the seat at its other terminals. It also says nothing about the total: when demand surged, the same operator reactivated conventional berths and ramped up manpower, so the conventional terminals and the people who crew them are the capacity that gets switched on. The work exists, and it exists as a buffer.
Working the crane

Two parties who agree on nothing else describe the same split, which is why it is worth trusting. The union, describing an automated yard, says the cranes operate without operators and that crane specialists monitor and intervene when necessary. The executed collective agreement on the other side of the world permits remote operation of the same equipment class but requires that the operator keeps control of the vertical and horizontal movement of cargoes for vessel loading and truck delivery. A European operator that calls its terminal fully automated puts a number on it: around 80% of crane movements are automated, with the remaining manual operations performed remotely. So the travelling is automatic and the pick and the set-down are not.
Eighty per cent automated is not eighty per cent of the job gone: the remaining fifth is the part that needs a person, and one person can now hold several cranes. It also does not say where the person sits. In one market the cab is being kept by a contract clause rather than by the technology, which means the direction here is partly a bargaining outcome, and bargaining outcomes expire.
Lashing the boxes down

The operator running the most automated terminal in the world advertises this job as a three-month traineeship with a skills certificate, requiring the ability to lift heavy objects and work at heights, and pays its largest joining bonus for the supervisor version of it. The one thing it did automate here in 2025 is precise and narrow: a new quay crane that transfers containers directly to the lashing platform, which the operator says eliminates the need for manual coordination between the crane and the horizontal transport. The machine took the handoff between two machines. The person still climbs.
Being hard to automate is not the same as being well paid or safe, and a job that survives because it is unpleasant is surviving on a thin reason. The operator ran tabletop exercises for abnormal lashing scenarios with nearly a hundred participants in the same year it automated the handoff, which tells you the risk is live rather than resolved.
Keeping the fleet running

This is where the work went, and the operator names it rather than gesturing at it: the automated vehicle fleet is described as guided by a central management network supported by specialised backend systems and dedicated information technology teams, and new staff in those teams do a two-week immersion in the control centre to correlate backend system logs with live terminal manoeuvres. The trials of autonomous prime movers at the older terminal are backed by remote exception-handling. On the same operator's job board, engineering is the largest category of open positions and operations is second.
New work appearing is not the same headcount, the same pay or the same person. These are engineering and information technology roles with their own entry requirements, and nothing in the operator's own account says that the people whose seat was removed are the people who filled them. It also concentrates: one control room covers a terminal that used to need a driver in every vehicle.
What the contract says a machine may do

On one coast the answer is written down and enforceable. The master contract in force says there shall be no fully automated terminals developed and no fully automated container handling equipment used during its term, defining fully automated as devoid of human interaction, and that no remotely operated ship-to-shore cranes shall be used at any port during the term. It sets a minimum manning of one operator per machine when gate and vessel operations run at once, requires that new work created by the technology be identified by craft before anything is implemented, and backs it with ten thousand dollars a day and a right to withhold labour. Whether the technology works is not the binding constraint there.
A contract covers the ports its parties operate and expires on a date. It is also not evidence that the technology failed: it is evidence that where dockworkers had the leverage to bargain over it, they wrote the manning into the agreement. In ports without that leverage the same equipment runs differently, which is why this page cannot be generalised from any one market.
Recent changes#
One operator, in Singapore, reporting on its own terminals, in an annual sustainability report covering the calendar year 2025. Two clauses carry the linked tasks. On horizontal transport, the report states that at the fully automated Tuas Port traditional prime movers have been replaced by a fleet of driverless automated guided vehicles, guided by a central management network supported by specialised backend systems and dedicated information technology teams. On the work that automation created, it states that new information technology employees undergo a two-week immersion within the control centre to correlate backend system logs with live terminal manoeuvres, and names the training built for this transition, including a work-study diploma in port automation technology run with a technical institute. The mechanism matters more than the fact: this terminal was built around the machines rather than converted, and at the same company's older Pasir Panjang terminal the equivalent vehicles were still in operational trials through 2025 with deployment planned with safety drivers, so the same operator runs both models in one city. What it does not establish, and this is where a reader should be careful: the report gives no quayside headcount, no ratio of control-room staff to machines, and names neither the origin nor the destination roles of the 1,700. Group headcount rose from 9,695 to 10,290 across three years, but that figure spans warehousing, engineering and technology, so it is not evidence about this occupation. Read it beside the number in the same table that moves the other way: collective bargaining agreement coverage fell from 74.3% to 68.3% to 67%, which the report attributes to a growing number of contract staff. The publisher is marketing this terminal as the most automated in the world and the conclusion that automation created good jobs is one the document exists to support.
An employer has put it into production. Can move the baseline — weighted by scale and how similar the setting is.
United States east and gulf coast ports only, and only for the term of this agreement, which runs from 1 October 2024 to 30 September 2030. It is an executed collective agreement published by a signatory, so both parties have an interest and they point in opposite directions, which is what makes the text stronger than either side's account of it. Article XI says there shall be no fully-automated terminals developed and no fully-automated container handling equipment used during the term, defining fully-automated as devoid of human interaction, and separately that no remotely operated ship-to-shore cranes shall be used at any port during the term. Rail-mounted and rubber-tyred gantry cranes may be operated remotely, but the clause requires that the equipment provide the represented operator with control of the vertical and horizontal movement of cargoes for vessel loading and unloading and truck receiving and delivery, with a minimum manning of one operator per machine while gate and vessel operations run simultaneously. The workforce-protection procedure requires the parties to identify the new work created by the technology by craft before implementation, which is unusually close to the unit this site uses. Enforcement is real rather than hortatory: a terminal found in violation pays ten thousand dollars per day to the local container royalty fund, and where it refuses to acknowledge a violation the union may withhold labour. What it does not establish: nothing about whether the technology works, and nothing about any other country. It is a bargained outcome, and reading it as evidence that automation failed inverts it — it is evidence that where dockworkers had the leverage to bargain, the manning was written down rather than engineered away. It also expires.
Failure, rollback, regulation or cost is suppressing adoption. Can lower an assessment or widen its uncertainty.
What this means for you#
The entry seat that is disappearing is the vehicle: at a purpose-built automated terminal there is no prime mover to drive. The entry seats that are still advertised are the ones that are outdoors and physical, and the largest joining bonus on one operator's board is for the hardest of them. If you are choosing, notice that the engineering ladder and the operations ladder start at the same place and separate quickly, and that at automated terminals the engineering side is where the vacancies are. The qualification that moves you is a technical one, and it is cheaper to get before you are on shifts than after.
Your crane time is worth most in the fifth of movements that are still manual, and that fifth is done from a screen at automated terminals. Ask which of the two your next terminal is, and whether the remote desk is staffed by former cab operators or hired separately — the answer tells you whether your seat converts or ends. If you are in a port with a collective agreement, read what it actually says about remote operation and manning, because on one coast that clause is doing more to keep the seat than any technical limit is, and it has an expiry date on it.

Move into the remote desk while the conversion is being staffed
At automated terminals the manual fifth of crane movements is performed remotely, so the skill transfers directly — what changes is the seat, the sightlines and the fact that you now hold more than one machine. Terminals doing this are training for it, and the training is the window.
There are fewer desks than there were cabs, and depth perception through a camera is a genuinely different skill that some operators never get comfortable with. Pay does not automatically follow, and in some terminals the remote desk sits in a different department.

Cross to the engineering side
At the most automated terminals engineering is the largest category of open positions, because the labour moved from operating the machine to keeping the fleet running. Knowing how the yard actually behaves is worth more in fault-finding than any classroom, and that is the part an outside hire does not have.
This is a real technical qualification, not a relabelling, and it usually means study alongside shifts. Operators run work-study diplomas with technical institutes for exactly this crossing, which makes it cheaper than doing it alone but ties you to one employer for a period.
Count your employer's current vacancies by category. At an automated terminal engineering usually outnumbers operations, and that ratio is the honest forecast of where the next decade of hiring goes.
Be the one who handles the exception
Automated fleets run on remote exception handling, and lashing still needs drills for abnormal scenarios. Every automated terminal keeps people who can go out and deal with the thing the system cannot, and that group is chosen rather than rostered.
Rare work is hard to stay sharp at, and being the one called out at three in the morning has a cost that does not show up in the pay. It is also a smaller group by definition, so this is a path for a minority of the shift rather than a plan for all of it.
Ask who gets called when a vehicle stops in the wrong place, and how that list is decided. If the answer is whoever is nearest, the list does not exist yet, and that is the opening.
Take the certificate to a terminal that has not converted
Conversion happens per site, not per industry, and conventional terminals are the capacity that gets switched on when demand surges — one operator reactivated berths and ramped up manpower when shipping was rerouted. The skills are portable in a way the seat is not.
This is a bet on the pace of conversion at a specific place, and it can go wrong quickly. Conventional terminals are also where the older equipment and the harder conditions are, and moving for one usually means moving city or country.
Look up whether the terminal you are considering has published an automation programme and what stage it says it is at. Operators publish this in annual reports because investors ask; the language to look for is the difference between trials and replaced.
Common questions#
Ask about your berth, not about the industry, because this arrives per site. The question that decides it is whether your terminal is being converted or a new one is being built next to it: the clearest removal of a whole task anywhere in this occupation happened at a terminal purpose-built around the machines, while the same operator's older terminal in the same city still runs prime movers with drivers and still advertises for them. So find out three things: whether there is a funded automation programme for your specific terminal, whether it is a conversion or a new build, and whether your employer is still recruiting for your seat there. The third one is public — it is on their own job board — and it is the most honest signal available to you.
The honest answer has two halves and most accounts give only the first. At one operator running the world's largest fully automated terminal, group headcount rose across three years while throughput hit a record, and it says more than 1,700 employees moved into new roles since the terminal opened. That is the first half, and it is real. The second half is in the same report: collective bargaining coverage fell from 74.3% to 67% over the same period, which the operator attributes to a growing number of contract staff. Headcount held and the terms underneath it moved. Note also that the headcount figure is group-wide across warehousing, engineering and technology — the operator does not break out quayside and yard staff, so nobody, including us, can tell you what happened to this specific job from that number.
Lashing, by a distance. It is outdoors, at height, with heavy objects, on a surface that moves, and no operator has published anything suggesting it is close. The one thing automated around it recently was the transfer between two machines, not the securing itself, and the operator that did it ran exercises for abnormal lashing scenarios in the same year. After that comes the exception: the vehicle stopped in the wrong place, the box that will not release, the weather. Automation in this industry is very good at the repetitive middle of a movement and has not touched either end of it.
In one market it has, in writing and with penalties attached. A high start, because container handling was already the most mechanised physical work on this site before any of this: gantry cranes, stacking systems and terminal operating software long predate language models, and none of what follows is built on them. The steady climb is one thing arriving repeatedly rather than a breakthrough — purpose-built automated terminals opening, each of which removes the driving seat inside its own fence and none of which changes the terminal next door. It does not flatten, because more of them keep opening; it does not steepen, because each one costs a decade and a port. The level stops short of the top for a reason visible on any quay: lashing is outdoors, at height, on a surface that moves, and nobody has published anything suggesting it is close.
A flat line is not a forecast of safety. It says which tasks automation has reached so far — the occupations that moved least here are the ones where the constraint is physical or regulatory, and both of those can change.
