Electrician — tasks, one by one

The unit of analysis is the task, not the job title. Each one below carries its direction, whether the judgement rests on evidence or on platform inference, the reasoning, and what it does not establish.

Installation in real buildings

Still human-led≈ Platform inference

Running cable through walls that are not where the drawing says, in a building full of other trades, to code.

Robotics
Why

Every site is different, the work is in confined and unstructured spaces, and it interacts with other trades' work in real time. No robotics programme addresses this, and the constraint is the physical world rather than any missing algorithm. It is the largest part of the job and the least exposed task we assess anywhere on the site.

What this does NOT mean

The least exposed task on the site is still exposed to how many buildings get built. Its risk is the construction cycle and interest rates, not automation — which does not make it a safe decade.

Fault finding

Being augmented≈ Platform inference

Working out why the circuit trips, with incomplete records and a customer watching.

AI / softwareRobotics
Why

Diagnostic assistants that reason from symptoms and regulations are genuinely useful for the less experienced, and smart meters and monitored installations give more data to work from. The physical investigation — opening things, testing, following the cable — is the bulk of the time and stays human.

What this does NOT mean

Diagnostic assistants help the less experienced most, which compresses the wage premium that experience used to earn. The task stays human while the reason to pay a veteran for it weakens.

Testing, certification and paperwork

Being augmented≈ Platform inference

The inspection and test results, the certificates, the notifications to the authority, all to a standard that carries legal liability.

RPA / self-serviceAI / software
Why

Certification software and test instruments that write their own reports have cut the paperwork substantially, and assistants help with looking up the regulation that applies. The signature and the liability remain with a qualified person, which is a regulatory choice unlikely to change.

What this does NOT mean

A regulatory choice protects the signature, and regulators periodically review what must be signed. Self-certification schemes already exist in several markets.

Quoting, scheduling and the customer

Being augmented≈ Platform inference

Pricing a job from a description, keeping five jobs moving, explaining to a householder why it costs what it costs.

AI / softwareRPA / self-service
Why

Trade-business software and assistants handle quotes, invoices and scheduling far better than the paper diary did, which matters most for the self-employed. The customer relationship and the judgement about what a job will really involve once the wall is open remain the tradesperson's.

What this does NOT mean

Better software here mostly helps the self-employed compete with each other. It raises the floor on admin quality without raising what anyone can charge.

Electrification: EV chargers, heat pumps, solar, storage

New task✓ Evidence-backed

Installing and integrating the equipment that the shift away from fossil fuels puts into every building.

Robotics
Why

Electrification is adding work to this trade faster than any technology removes it: every charger, heat pump and battery is an electrical installation, and grid connections, data-centre construction and building retrofits all need electricians. Shortages of qualified electricians are reported in most developed economies, and the automation wave itself — data centres, robots, sensors — is part of the demand.

What this does NOT mean

This demand is created by policy — subsidies, bans, targets — and policy reverses. A trade whose growth depends on a subsidy schedule should read the schedule.
