Evidence stage
PilotSmall-scale trial in a real setting. Tells us the deployment conditions are being tested, not that they hold — so one pilot is never enough on its own; two independent ones are.
Tasks this bears on
Driving the route
Keeping a full-size vehicle on a fixed route through mixed traffic, stop by stop, to a timetable.
Automating✓ Evidence-backed
Getting people on and off safely
Lowering the ramp for a wheelchair or a pram, waiting for the slow boarder, checking the doors, answering the question at the front.
Being augmented≈ Platform inference
Watching the bus drive itself
Sitting in the driver's seat of an autonomous bus, not driving it, ready to take over when it hesitates or errs.
New task≈ Platform inference
Supervising several buses from a control room
Monitoring a group of autonomous vehicles on screens, deciding what to do when one stops, and dispatching help to the road.

Where this applies
The authority's own release on services 400 and 191: six 16-seat buses, an initial three-year pilot from the second half of 2026, running alongside manned buses. It sets out the task split in two phases: a safety operator on board at all times first; then a remote operator monitoring continuously from a control centre, with a customer service officer on board to assist commuters. Existing bus captains are to be trained as safety operators, and the authority, operators and the transport workers' union will prepare training for new roles. It establishes a plan and a procurement, not an outcome: no bus had carried a passenger in this pilot when it was published, and it says nothing about how many drivers' jobs a network would need.
What this means
A transport authority has written down, before its first autonomous bus carried anyone, which parts of a bus driver's job move where: driving first to a safety operator in the seat, then to a remote operator in a control room, with a separate person kept on board for passengers.
What it does not yet show
It is a plan for six buses on two routes. It does not show that the remote phase is reached, how many vehicles one remote operator will supervise, or how many driver jobs a whole network would keep.
What you can check
Ask your operator or union whether autonomous-bus training for safety operators or remote operators has been offered at your depot, and who was asked first.
Does it change the assessment?
No. The impact index is never moved by a single event. Of the 4 linked judgements above, 2 moved from inference to evidence with this record; the other 0 already rested on earlier evidence.
