This is not a probability of losing your job. It combines how much of the role's task load is exposed to automation with how far adoption has actually gone — useful for comparing occupations on one consistent basis, and for nothing else.
Written for metro and urban rail — a sealed right of way, fixed stations, a timetable set in advance. Mainline rail is deliberately outside it: freight and intercity services share track with other operators, cross level crossings and run without platform screen doors, and the automation picture there is barely comparable. Tram and light rail sit in between and are closer to road driving. The single thing that decides everything on this page is the grade of automation the line runs at, defined in IEC 62267: at GoA2 the train accelerates and brakes itself while a driver still closes the doors and handles disruption, and at GoA4 there is no one on board at all. Conflating the two is the most common error written about this job, and this page keeps them apart throughout.

Driving between stations

This is the oldest completed automation of a whole occupation task anywhere on this site, and it was not done with intelligence. A metro train travels a known path with no oncoming traffic, no pedestrians and no decisions about route, so the control problem is closed: the industry standard table assigns setting the train in motion and stopping the train to the machine from grade two upward, and grade two lines have been ordinary for decades. What moved the frontier recently was not better perception but cheaper retrofitting — Japan now runs commercial service where the speed between stations is entirely automatic on a line that has level crossings and no platform doors, which used to be the boundary case that required a person.
What moved is the control, not the cab. On the grade most of the world's metro kilometres actually run at, the machine drives and a person still sits in front — so the hours did not go anywhere, the content of them changed. It also says nothing about how fast this spreads, because what gates it is civil engineering: sealed track and platform doors, paid for over a decade, not software bought in a quarter.
Closing the doors

Read the industry's own grade table as a list of five tasks and this is the fourth to move: automatic from grade four, and the driver's job at grade two and three. It is the interesting one because the difficulty was never the mechanism. A door closes itself easily; what is hard is being sure nothing is in it, and the answer was not a better sensor but a wall — platform screen doors turn an open judgement into a closed one, which is why an operator will say it cannot run unattended until every station has them.
A wall is not a machine learning to look, so nothing here transfers to any other occupation. It also does not establish that the person watching the platform disappeared: on lines with screen doors the watching moved to cameras in a control room, and the control room is staffed.
When the train stops in a tunnel

The grade table puts operation in the event of disruption in the machine's column only at the top grade, and even there the disruption handled is the technical kind. Evacuation is assigned to the person on board at every grade below it, and the reason is not sentiment: it is a physical task performed once, under smoke or panic, where the cost of being wrong is not recoverable. Japan's transport ministry, listing what it must reassign before a train can run with an unlicensed attendant, puts evacuation guidance and abnormal-condition operation on that list rather than crossing them off.
Being irreplaceable in an emergency is not the same as being employed for one. These events are rare by design, and an operator can keep the capability without keeping the roster — by putting fewer people on more trains, or by keeping licensed drivers on call rather than in cabs. The protection is real and it is thin.
Being a person who is there

The standard's own definition of the top grade is operation without staff on board of the trains, and the words on board are doing a great deal of work. Operators converting to it keep saying, in their own board papers, that they expect to need staff presence within the system beyond that point; and one of them, having negotiated the change with its union, recorded that station staff numbers would go up rather than down. The help points being installed on the trains are a route to a person, not a replacement for one.
Staff presence in the system is not the same job as driving a train, it usually pays differently, and it is rostered differently. Counting it as the driver surviving would be the mistake this page exists to avoid — what survived is a headcount in a company, not a seat in a cab, and the person filling it may be someone else.
Running the line from a screen

This is where the work went. An operator rebuilding its system around unattended operation describes the new control centre as the hub of the new operating model and has training programmes running for its roles; a national workforce study of the same transition says the remaining focus shifts towards monitoring technology solutions and interpreting data to manage exceptions through dashboards, and names use of data and interpretation of outputs from automated systems as the emerging function. The work is real and it is a smaller number of people in one room, which is exactly what makes it worth naming rather than celebrating.
New work appearing is not new headcount, and here the arithmetic is unusually visible: one desk watches a line that used to need a driver on every train. It is also not the same career. The route from a cab to a control desk exists but it is not automatic, and the same workforce study that named this function also noted that the people in the cabs would themselves be measured by sensors on the trains.
Taking the train back by hand

The licence does not disappear, it changes shape. Japan's white paper describes an operator expanding automatic running only after first securing drivers able to drive manually in abnormal conditions, and replacing drivers with a new grade of attendant trained in about two months against the roughly nine months it takes to make a driver. That is the clearest thing anyone has published about what this automation actually does to a workforce: it does not remove the person from the front of the train, it lowers the qualification required to sit there and keeps a smaller number of licensed drivers in reserve behind them.
A reserve is not a roster. Keeping the capability requires far fewer licensed people than running the service used to, and it requires them to stay current on a skill they now rarely use, which is a training cost somebody has to carry. This also describes one country's chosen path; nothing here says other operators will take it rather than going straight to unattended operation.
Recent changes#
One system, in one city, and the document is a public body's own board paper recording an accepted collective agreement rather than a plan. Under Consequences it states that the number of station staff has been reviewed and will increase to support extended operating hours, and that the agreement carries confirmation that no further industrial action will be taken in relation to these terms and conditions or extended operating hours. Negotiations had been running since 2022, alongside an industrial dispute in 2025, and were deliberately timed to conclude with the modernisation so that all implications of the target operating model could be understood by all parties. The cost is stated: up to around 244,000 pounds per annum, made up of a de-consolidated shift allowance rising from 12% to 14%, better sick pay, higher overtime multipliers and a festive payment rising from 75 to 100 pounds a day. One structural detail matters more than the money: the conditions of service instrument covers station staff and drivers together, in two grades, and it is being renewed into the unattended era rather than wound up. What it does not establish: an increase in station staff is not the same as the drivers being retained, the paper gives no headcount for either, and it is a forward statement in a board paper rather than a measurement of what has happened. The same publisher's own reports also show the readiness milestone for unattended operation moving from July 2026 to the first quarter of 2027 between two consecutive updates, so the trigger for all of this has itself slipped.
Verifiable change in hiring, headcount, hours or job scope. Highest weight — but causal attribution still has to be argued, not assumed.
One line, one operator, one country, and it is conventional railway rather than metro — the line has level crossings and no platform screen doors, which is what makes it the boundary case rather than the ordinary one. The ministry states the service began in March 2024 as the first automatic operation in Japan on a commercial line with level crossings and without platform doors, and that as of the March 2025 timetable revision about 40% of its trains are run by conductors who do not hold a driving licence. The split of tasks is stated precisely and is the useful part: speed regulation between stations is entirely automatic, while the attendant performs the start request and the door operation, and presses the emergency stop button on noticing an abnormality. Training is the number worth carrying: the operator says it normally takes about nine months to make a driver from a conductor, and about two months to make one of these attendants, because no manual driving proficiency has to be trained; what is trained instead is emergency stopping and abnormal-condition response, and the attendant works alone. The ministry also records the operator expanding this only after first securing drivers able to drive manually in abnormal conditions, and gives the stated motive as a shrinking labour supply rather than cost. What it does not establish: no headcount, no redundancy, and no claim that anyone lost a job — a licensed driver becomes a reserve rather than a rostered post, and whether that is fewer people in total is not stated. It is also a grade the international standard does not define, invented domestically to put a person at the front who is not a driver.
An employer has put it into production. Can move the baseline — weighted by scale and how similar the setting is.
Worldwide, and it counts kilometres rather than people. The publisher is an international association of public transport operators and suppliers, reporting through its own Observatory of Automated Metros, which in its own words gathers the world's leading operators with experience in full automated metro operation — so this is an industry body counting its own members' systems, and the same series carries a section headed the case for automation. The definition is the load-bearing part and it is narrow: automated here means designed for operation without staff on board of the trains, with a defining characteristic being the absence of a driver's cabin, which the standard IEC 62267 calls Grade of Automation 4. Every line where the train accelerates and brakes itself while a driver still closes the doors is therefore absent from these figures, so the 11% is the share with nobody aboard and not the share where driving is automatic. What it does not establish: no staffing number, no ratio of control-room staff to trains, nothing about what happened to anyone. It also cannot be compared line for line against the same publisher's earlier briefs, which state that historical figures are revised. One thing it does settle: the same publisher forecast in its 2019 brief that a further 2,000 km would be commissioned within five years, tripling the total; its own later series shows the stock going from 1,133 km to 2,279 km over that window, which is roughly 57% of the forecast increment.
An employer has put it into production. Can move the baseline — weighted by scale and how similar the setting is.
What this means for you#
The entry route is narrowing in a specific way rather than closing: in the places converting, the vacancy is increasingly for an attendant or a station role rather than a licensed driver, and the training that gets you there is months rather than the better part of a year. That is quicker to enter and cheaper to replace, which are the same fact seen from two sides. If you want the licence anyway, the thing that keeps its value is manual driving in degraded conditions, because that is what an operator has to keep somebody for.
Your licence is worth most in the two places automation does not reach: driving manually when the system is degraded, and being the person in front when something happens in a tunnel. Both are reserve capabilities, which means they are kept by fewer people than the service used to need. The move that pays is into the control centre, and it is not automatic — the operators converting their lines are running training programmes for those roles now, which is the window. Ask which grade your line is being converted to and when platform doors are funded; those two answers set your timetable more precisely than any forecast about the technology.

Four directions, each with its real constraints and one thing you can test this week. Continuing as you are is a legitimate choice — it just has to be a chosen one.
Move to the control centre before the conversion finishes
The control centre is where the work goes, and the operators converting their lines are recruiting and training for it now rather than after. Driving experience is a genuine qualification for it: you know what a train feels like when it is about to be late, which is not in any dashboard.
There are far fewer desks than there were cabs, so this is a competitive internal move rather than a transfer. Shift patterns are usually no better. In some operators the control centre sits under a different department with its own pay grade, which can mean a sideways or downward step before it becomes an upward one.

Become the one they keep for degraded mode
Every automated line keeps people who can drive it by hand when the signalling drops, when a section is under works, or when a failed train has to be moved. That capability is a licence requirement, it is retained by a smaller group, and the group is chosen rather than rostered.
Being kept for the rare case means doing it rarely, and a skill you use twice a year needs deliberate recurrent training that somebody has to pay for. It is also a smaller group by definition, so this is a path for a minority of a shrinking roster rather than a plan for everyone on it.
Ask your depot who is currently authorised for manual operation on your line and how often they are re-assessed. If nobody can answer, that is the gap; if the list is short and closed, find out what put people on it.
Cross into signalling and rolling-stock maintenance
Automation moves the labour from operating the vehicle to keeping the system that operates it running. Operators converting their lines describe maintenance as one of the things still to be resolved, and the engineering side is where the vacancies concentrate in automated systems.
This is a real retraining, not a relabelling: it takes a technical qualification and usually a pay dip while you get it, and it competes with people who came up through engineering. The advantage you have is knowing how the line behaves, which is worth more in fault-finding than in the classroom.
Look at your operator's current vacancies and count how many are engineering against how many are operations. At heavily automated systems that ratio is often the wrong way round from what people expect, and it tells you where the next decade of hiring is.
Take the safety-critical judgement somewhere it is still rostered
What you actually do that is scarce is make an irreversible call under time pressure with incomplete information, and be accountable for it. That transfers to control and dispatch work in other regulated systems — freight rail, ports, utilities, aviation ground operations — where the same automation has not arrived because the environment is not sealed.
Each of those has its own licensing and its own seniority ladder, so you arrive near the bottom of a different one. Shift work follows you. And the thing that makes those environments resistant to automation is the same thing that makes them harder: the environment is not sealed, so more can go wrong.
Write down the last three times you made a call nobody could check in the moment, and what would have happened if you had waited. That list is the transferable part of this job, and it is the only part of it that reads the same on a different industry's application form.
Common questions#
Do not take a number from anyone, including us. Check two things about your own line instead, because they decide it more tightly than any forecast. First, does every station have platform screen doors, or is there a funded programme to install them? Unattended operation is not approved without them, and they are civil works measured in years and budget rounds. Second, what grade is your line signalled to today? If the train already accelerates and brakes itself and you close the doors, the remaining step is a decision about staffing and screen doors, not about technology. If you still drive it manually, you are behind two steps rather than one. Across the world, automated lines are about a ninth of total metro kilometres at the most recent global count, and the first one opened more than forty years ago — this is a slow, capital-gated change, and it arrives per line, all at once.
Because driving is only one of five things the standard assigns, and it is the easiest. The industry's own grade table lists setting the train in motion, stopping it, closing the doors and operating in the event of disruption. At the grade most metro kilometres run at, the machine does the first two and a person does the last two.
