Finding why something broke when the cause is not where the symptom is.

Where this applies
Google engineers describing their own internal tooling. Google randomly assigned 50% of all its developers to receive ML-suggested fixes for broken builds in the IDE and compared them with the rest for 11 weeks; afterwards about 34% of users experiencing a build breakage in a month applied such fixes, and ML-powered build repair was enabled for all Google developers. A developer previews each fix and chooses to accept or reject it. These are build and compile errors — the kind the post calls well understood — not runtime faults whose cause is far from the symptom; Google sells developer AI tools.
What this means
The simplest kind of debugging — fixing a build that will not compile — is now machine-suggested at one of the largest engineering organisations, with the developer accepting or rejecting each fix. Finding a fault far from its symptom is not what it does.
What it does not yet show
One company's tooling for build errors; it does not show juniors debugging less or how runtime faults are found.
What you can check
Open Google Research's post of April 23, 2024 and find "ML-powered build repair is now enabled for all Google developers".
Does it change the assessment?
No. The impact index is never moved by a single event. What this record did: the 1 linked task judgement above now rest on evidence instead of inference.
