Two MS&AD insurers put a tool into claims payment that flags claim photos likely made or altered with generative AI, as reference for handlers who keep the final decision

Evidence stage
DeploymentAn employer has put it into production. Can move the baseline — weighted by scale and how similar the setting is.
Tasks this bears on
Spotting the invented claim
Fraud: the staged accident, the pre-existing damage, the loss that happened three days before the policy started.
Being augmented✓ Evidence-backed
Where this applies
Two of Japan's largest non-life insurers, both in the MS&AD group, announcing with their image-analysis partner a function in their claims-payment work: it analyses the electronic features and accompanying information of the photos customers submit to prove a loss, in several layers, to detect images that may have been created or processed with generative AI, or altered or reused. The result is used as reference information in the claims departments, and the release states that the final decision on paying a claim is made by the person in charge, as before. The insurers call it a first stage. The image-analysis company co-signs the release and shares a pending patent, so it has a stake. There are no figures on volumes, detection rates or false alarms.
What this means
Faked evidence has become cheap to make, and insurers are answering with machines that screen the photos — but the output goes to a handler as a flag, not a verdict. Spotting the invented claim is becoming a joint job, with the decision still with a person.
What it does not yet show
It is an announcement of a first-stage tool at two insurers, with no detection or false-alarm figures; it does not show how many claims are flagged or how handlers' work changed.
What you can check
Open the MS&AD insurers' joint release of 3 August 2026 on generative-AI image fraud and find footnote ※3, "保険金のお支払いに関する最終的な判断は、従来どおり担当者が行います。"
Does it change the assessment?
No. The impact index is never moved by a single event. Nor did this record change a layer: all 1 linked judgement above already rested on earlier evidence. This one adds to them.
