Veterinarian
Examines animals, works out what is wrong, treats and operates on them, prescribes and signs the certificates owners need — and explains all of it to the person holding the lead. Software is reaching the reading of X-rays and tests and the writing of notes and reminders; in Singapore the law reserves treating an animal for licensed people.

This is not a probability of losing your job. It combines how much of the role's task load is exposed to automation with how far adoption has actually gone — useful for comparing occupations on one consistent basis, and for nothing else.
Written for veterinarians in general companion-animal practice — dogs, cats and other pets. It does not cover farm and livestock veterinarians, veterinarians in public health or laboratories, or veterinary nurses and technicians, whose work differs. Singapore's licensing rule on treating animals establishes who may treat, not how a diagnosis is reached or how much of the paperwork software now drafts; the wording we read is the 2020 revised edition of the law, in force from 31 December 2021, and the legislative history does not say which earlier amendment gave the rule its present form. The judgements about software rest on what it can do rather than on a measurement of how widely vets use it. Nothing on this page counts veterinarians.
What is actually changing#
The unit of analysis is the task, not the job title. A role is not replaced — its task mix shifts.
Each tile is one task. Its size is how much of the job it is; its colour is where the task is heading. Click a tile to see what the judgement does not establish.
This rests on the nature of the work and the state of the technology, not on a record of how examinations are done; it says nothing about how many consultations move to video calls for simple questions.
This rests on what the tools can do, not on a measurement of how many practices use them or how accurate they are on real cases; and the new law is not yet in force.
This is one country's law and the state of the technology; the law establishes who may treat, not that tools cannot assist, and it says nothing about how the work is shared with veterinary nurses.
The new law is not yet in force and its detailed rules are still to be made; this judgement does not establish how much of the drafting behind a certificate software already does.
This rests on the nature of the conversation, not on a record of how owners use online advice or how often they now arrive with a diagnosis from a chatbot.
This rests on what the software offers, not on a measurement of how many practices use note-drafting tools; errors in a drafted note are still the vet's to catch.
Is this your job? Say so and this page narrows to your share of it.

Recent changes#
The Act as published on Singapore Statutes Online, read in the current version (as at 26 September 2026). Section 53(1): a person other than an authorised officer must not treat, vaccinate or inoculate any animal or bird except under and in accordance with the conditions of a licence issued by the Director-General; section 53(2): contravening it is an offence punishable by a fine of up to $10,000, imprisonment of up to 12 months, or both. Section 54 separately requires veterinary centres to be licensed. The record is dated to 31 December 2021, when the 2020 Revised Edition of the Act, the version read here, came into operation; the legislative history lists the amendments but does not say which of them gave section 53 its present wording. It establishes who may treat an animal in Singapore; it does not say that tools cannot assist, and it says nothing about diagnosis, prescribing or how many veterinarians there are. A Veterinary Practice Act passed by Parliament on 8 April 2026, which reserves diagnosis, surgical treatment, prescribing and certification for qualified veterinarians, comes into operation on a date the Minister appoints and is not what this record reads.
Failure, rollback, regulation or cost is suppressing adoption. Can lower an assessment or widen its uncertainty.
What this means for you#
If you are starting out, expect to spend less of your career typing notes and more of it on the parts no one can do for you: handling animals, operating, and the conversation with a worried owner. Software will read some of your X-rays with you. In Singapore, the law says treating an animal needs a licence, and a new law passed in 2026 will reserve diagnosis, surgery and prescribing for qualified vets once it comes into force.
The clinical core has not moved; the edges have. Expect note-drafting and image-reading tools to arrive in your practice, and owners who have already asked a chatbot. In Singapore, watch the new Veterinary Practice Act: when it comes into force, its rules will say which tasks nurses and technicians may do under your supervision and which remain yours alone.
Your options#
Four directions, each with its real constraints and one thing you can test this week. Continuing as you are is a legitimate choice — it just has to be a chosen one.
Stay in practice, and own the hands-on and the hard conversations
Treatment, surgery and the decisions made with owners are the parts of the job software is furthest from, and the parts the law ties to a licensed person.
Clinical work is physically and emotionally demanding, and practice ownership in many markets is consolidating into larger groups.

Specialise in surgery, imaging or another referral field
Referral work concentrates the hardest cases, where the judgement and the hands are the service; imaging specialists also become the people who check what reading software says.
Specialist training takes years of residency and exams, with few places.
Look up the entry requirements and length of one specialist programme you would consider, and whether a referral practice near you is hiring.
Move into public-health, regulatory or industry veterinary work
Food safety, disease control, import checks and animal-health companies need veterinary training, and much of that work is inspection and judgement rather than routine paperwork.
Posts are fewer than in practice, and government roles may require local registration and citizenship.
Read two job postings from a food-safety or animal-health authority and note the qualifications they ask for.
Common questions#
Not the core of the job on present evidence. Examining, treating and operating on animals is hand work current robots do not do, and in Singapore the law says a person must not treat, vaccinate or inoculate an animal without a licence. What is changing is the work around it: software that reads radiographs and slides, and tools that draft notes, reminders and bills.
We do not answer that with a number of years. There is a rule you can watch instead: in Singapore, the new Veterinary Practice Act comes into force on a date the Minister sets. When it does, its detailed rules will say which acts only a vet may do and which others may do under supervision — if diagnosis and prescribing stay on the reserved list, the core of the job stays tied to a qualified person.
Software that reads animal radiographs and analyses slides is sold to veterinary practices, and most blood numbers already come from machines. What it produces is a finding for the vet to check; the diagnosis for your animal is still made by the vet, and in Singapore the new law reserves diagnosis for qualified vets once it is in force.
Under the Animals and Birds Act, apart from authorised officers, a person must not treat, vaccinate or inoculate any animal or bird except under a licence issued by the Director-General and in line with its conditions; breaking this can mean a fine of up to S$10,000, up to 12 months in prison, or both. The Veterinary Practice Act passed in 2026 will add a register of veterinarians and a list of acts only they may do.
What these judgements rest on#
1 of 6 task judgements on this page are backed by a verified event and 5 are platform inference, each labelled where it appears. Behind them sit 3 technology dimensions, a reconstructed trajectory since language models reached the public, and 1 verified events.

A company divides its work into functions before it divides it into jobs. These sit in Core delivery (industry-specific) alongside this one — a fact about org charts, not a judgement that they are similar or that they are changing in the same direction.
