Where this applies
Audible's own press release of 13 May 2025, read in full in the Browser pane (a plain scripted request for it is answered with HTTP 503). Through select partnerships with publishers, Audible says it is bringing new audiobooks to life with its own fully integrated, end-to-end AI production technology; in the coming months publishers will choose between Audible-managed production and self-service production with the same technology, and pick from more than 100 AI-generated voices across English, Spanish, French and Italian. It also announces AI translation in beta later in 2025, including speech-to-speech translation that preserves the original narrator's voice. It is the company describing its own service: it gives no number of titles, publishers or narrators affected, and it says the company continues to invest in premium original content. It establishes that a producer that hires narrators is offering AI narration at scale, not how many audiobooks are now narrated by AI.
What this means
A company that commissions narrators now offers publishers a way to make an audiobook with no narrator at all, as a managed service or a self-service tool. For the narration task, that is automation offered at scale by the buyer of the work, not a capability demonstration.
What it does not yet show
It does not say how many titles have been made this way, how listeners rate them, or whether narrators' bookings fell; the company says it continues to invest in premium original content.
What you can check
Search your audiobook store for a title you know and check whether the narrator credit names a person or says the voice is AI-generated or virtual.
Does it change the assessment?
No. The impact index is never moved by a single event. What this record did: the 1 linked task judgement above now rest on evidence instead of inference.
