Tasks this bears on
Lending, returns and reservations
Checking items out and in, handling holds, and keeping the self-service kiosks and return chutes working — work librarians share with, and supervise, library clerks.

Where this applies
Every public library in Denmark, from the national statistics office's annual library statistics. The table splits each main and branch library's weekly opening hours into hours with staff and hours without; the reporting guide defines the split as opening hours with and without professional service, and Statistics Denmark has explained the unstaffed hours as time when borrowers use self-service. Across the country, weekly unstaffed hours rose from 3,241 in 2010 to 27,626 in 2025, while staffed hours fell from 12,523 to 9,129; the share of opening hours without staff, computed here from the table, went from about 21% to about 75%. It counts hours, not loans or visitors, and says nothing about why staffed hours fell; library staff numbers in another table fell over the same years, but nothing here connects the two.
What this means
In Denmark most of the time a public library is open, nobody from the staff is there: borrowers let themselves in and use self-service. The lending floor runs without a person for most of the week, and the staffed hours are the minority.
What it does not yet show
It measures opening hours, not how much borrowing happens without staff, and it does not show that self-service caused the fall in staffed hours or in library jobs.
What you can check
Open Statistics Denmark's StatBank table BIB2B, choose All Denmark and the four weekly opening-hours rows (main and branch libraries, with and without staff), and compare 2010 with 2025.
Does it change the assessment?
No. The impact index is never moved by a single event. Nor did this record change a layer: all 1 linked judgement above already rested on earlier evidence. This one adds to them.
