Evidence stage
ConstraintFailure, rollback, regulation or cost is suppressing adoption. Can lower an assessment or widen its uncertainty.
Tasks this bears on
Reading X-rays, scans and test results
Interpreting radiographs, ultrasound, blood work and slides to reach a diagnosis.
Being augmented✓ Evidence-backed
Notes, reminders and bills
Writing up consultations, sending vaccination and check-up reminders, and preparing estimates and invoices.
Automating✓ Evidence-backed
Where this applies
A professional standard of Alberta's veterinary regulator, binding on the veterinarians it licenses. It records that veterinary practices are adopting AI applications, and sets out that veterinarians must exercise clinical judgement and verify AI-generated recommendations before making any diagnosis or treatment decision, must never rely solely on AI in the diagnosis and treatment of a patient, and must review medical records generated by AI-powered applications for veracity, accuracy and completeness; veterinary professionals must be transparent about using AI and seek client consent when necessary. One Canadian province; it constrains how AI is used rather than whether, and it gives no figures on adoption.
What this means
Where AI now reads images or drafts the record, Alberta's regulator makes the vet answerable for both: the diagnosis cannot rest on the machine alone, and an AI-written record has to be checked before it stands.
What it does not yet show
It is one province's rule and binds how AI is used; it does not measure how much AI vets use or how much time review takes.
What you can check
Open the ABVMA's Use of AI in Veterinary Medicine Professional Standard and find "Veterinarians must never rely solely on the use of AI in the diagnosis and treatment of a patient".
Does it change the assessment?
No. The impact index is never moved by a single event. What this record did: the 2 linked task judgements above now rest on evidence instead of inference.
