Where this applies
United States, Delta Air Lines' mainline fleet. The airline says the FAA accepted its plan and that drone inspections have been added to the Aircraft Maintenance Manual for its entire mainline fleet, initially for conditional visual inspections after lightning strikes; once images are captured, trained TechOps technicians and inspectors evaluate them to determine airworthiness before returning the aircraft to service, and the airline says this helps them decide on aircraft condition up to 82% faster. It is the airline's own account; no FAA document was found, and staffing effects are not reported.
What this means
A machine now takes the inspection photographs, and the airworthiness decision stays exactly where it was: with trained technicians and inspectors. The job changes from climbing to look to looking at what the drone saw.
What it does not yet show
One airline's account and figure; it does not measure technician hours or staffing.
What you can check
Open Delta's Oct 4, 2024 news item on drone maintenance inspections and find "up to 82% faster".
Does it change the assessment?
No. The impact index is never moved by a single event. Nor did this record change a layer: all 1 linked judgement above already rested on earlier evidence. This one adds to them.
