Electrical engineer — tasks, one by one

The unit of analysis is the task, not the job title. Each one below carries its direction, whether the judgement rests on evidence or on platform inference, the reasoning, and what it does not establish.

Every task on this page#

Requirements and system design

Still human-led≈ Platform inference

Working out what the system must do, the loads and constraints, and choosing an architecture that will be safe, buildable and maintainable.

AI / software
Why

Requirements come from clients, sites and standards, and the trade-offs — cost, reliability, safety margins — are judgements someone answers for. US labour projections expect electrical and electronics engineering employment to grow 8 percent from 2025 to 2035, faster than the average for all occupations.

What this does NOT mean

A projection is not a result, and it counts jobs, not how much of the design work tools now do.

Circuit, board and chip design

Being augmented≈ Platform inference

Designing analog and digital circuits, writing hardware description code, and laying out boards and chips.

AI / software
Why

AI is capable here and still partial. On a benchmark of 156 hardware-description problems, the strongest model passed about four in ten on the first try; an academic system designed 20 analog circuits in its benchmark, five more than the base model, while its authors say models cannot yet design highly complex analog circuits; and Google says a reinforcement-learning method has laid out chips in its own accelerators. Engineers set the specification and check what is produced against power, performance and area.

What this does NOT mean

The benchmarks test short problems and do not measure power, performance and area; the chip-layout claim is the company describing its own method, not an independent measurement.

Power studies and grid interconnection

Being augmented✓ Evidence-backed

Running load-flow, protection and interconnection studies that decide whether a new generator or load can connect, and on what terms.

AI / softwareRPA / self-service
Why

The backlog of interconnection requests turned study work into a bottleneck, and rules now put it on a clock: US federal rules require cluster studies to be completed within 150 calendar days, with penalties of $1,000 per business day of delay. The largest US grid operator has begun using an AI-enabled tool to review large volumes of application data in its reformed process, and says it will evaluate the tool's impact.

What this does NOT mean

The grid operator's tool reviews application data rather than running the power-flow studies, and its impact has not been measured yet; the federal deadline does not require automation.

Testing, commissioning and faults

Still human-led✓ Evidence-backed

Testing and commissioning equipment, and investigating faults — often near energised parts.

RoboticsAI / software
Why

Work near live parts is fixed on qualified people by rule: in the US only qualified persons may work on electric circuit parts that have not been de-energised, and a qualified person must verify with test equipment that parts are de-energised.

What this does NOT mean

A US safety rule for workplaces; it does not measure how testing is done or how much diagnostic work software now does.

Codes and signing off installations

Still human-led✓ Evidence-backed

Making designs meet electrical safety codes and taking formal responsibility for installations where the law requires a licensed engineer.

AI / software
Why

Where the law licenses the role, responsibility sits with a named person: in Singapore the holder of an electrical engineer's licence — a registered professional engineer in electrical engineering — is entitled to design and take full charge and responsibility for any electrical installation, while technicians may design only smaller installations.

What this does NOT mean

Licensing rules differ by country and by type of installation; nothing here measures how much of the design behind a signed installation is drafted by software.
