Industrial engineer — tasks, one by one

The unit of analysis is the task, not the job title. Each one below carries its direction, whether the judgement rests on evidence or on platform inference, the reasoning, and what it does not establish.

Process design and improvement

Still human-led≈ Platform inference

Mapping how work is done, finding waste and bottlenecks, and redesigning processes — including deciding where to automate.

AI / softwareRPA / self-service
Why

Automation adds to this work rather than taking it: US projections expect industrial engineering employment to grow 12 percent from 2025 to 2035, as companies looking to lower costs need industrial engineers to optimise production processes, manage supply chains and provide expertise on automation.

What this does NOT mean

A projection counts jobs in the US; it does not measure how much of process analysis tools now do.

Layout and factory simulation

Being augmented✓ Evidence-backed

Laying out lines and facilities and testing them in simulation or a digital twin before anything is built or moved.

AI / software
Why

Digital twins now carry much of the testing. BMW says collision checks that required almost four weeks of real testing — a vehicle body guided through the line by hand, often over weekends — now take three days in simulation; Schaeffler says its industrial metaverse is in use at ten locations; Hyundai's Singapore innovation centre runs its line on a digital twin platform. Engineers still decide the layout the simulation tests.

What this does NOT mean

Manufacturers' own accounts of their own plants; BMW's further 30% planning-cost saving is a projection, and none reports engineering staffing.

Scheduling and line balancing

Being augmented≈ Platform inference

Balancing work across stations and scheduling production to meet due dates with the capacity available.

AI / software
Why

AI is capable here but the gains shrink on real problems. A reinforcement-learning dispatcher tested with Infineon improved tardiness by up to 4% and throughput by up to 1% on a real fab dataset, against double-digit gains on open benchmark models; an LLM agent balanced an assembly line to the same rate as existing optimisation algorithms, only in fewer iterations.

What this does NOT mean

Research results, not deployments; the fab study's industry data is not public and one co-author sells simulation software.

Work measurement and standards

Being augmented≈ Platform inference

Measuring how long tasks take and setting the standard times that plans and pay depend on.

AI / software
Why

Cameras can now time manual operations: a computer-vision model for motion time study produced times with no statistical difference from those measured by analysts with stopwatches, in a test on one assembly operation. Setting the standard and agreeing it with the people who do the work stays with the engineer.

What this does NOT mean

One laboratory test on a single manual operation; it does not measure use in plants.

Process hazard analysis

Still human-led✓ Evidence-backed

Analysing what can go wrong in a process and how to prevent it, and revalidating the analysis when the process changes.

AI / software
Why

US process-safety rules require the process hazard analysis to be performed by a team with expertise in engineering and process operations, including at least one employee with experience specific to the process, and to be updated and revalidated by such a team at least every five years.

What this does NOT mean

A US rule for processes involving highly hazardous chemicals; it does not cover most assembly work.
