Electrical engineer
Designs, analyses and answers for electrical systems — from chips and circuit boards to building installations and the grid: sets the requirements, designs circuits or power systems, runs load-flow and interconnection studies, tests and commissions equipment, and signs off designs that must meet safety codes. AI now helps write hardware code and lay out chips, and the largest US grid operator is using an AI tool to review interconnection applications. Live electrical work, sign-off on installations and the judgement behind a design remain engineers' work, and US projections expect the occupation to grow.

This is not a probability of losing your job. It combines how much of the role's task load is exposed to automation with how far adoption has actually gone — useful for comparing occupations on one consistent basis, and for nothing else.
Written for electrical and electronics engineers — in power utilities and grid operators, building services, and electronics and chip design. Electricians who install and repair wiring have their own page. The evidence is a grid operator's own announcement, US rules on interconnection and on work near live parts, Singapore's licensing regulations, a US labour projection and benchmarks of AI models on circuit design; it establishes what tools are in use, what rules require of a person and what models can do on test problems, not how engineers' time has changed.
What is actually changing#
The unit of analysis is the task, not the job title. A role is not replaced — its task mix shifts.
Each tile is one task. Its size is how much of the job it is; its colour is where the task is heading. Click a tile to see what the judgement does not establish.
A projection is not a result, and it counts jobs, not how much of the design work tools now do.
The benchmarks test short problems and do not measure power, performance and area; the chip-layout claim is the company describing its own method, not an independent measurement.
The grid operator's tool reviews application data rather than running the power-flow studies, and its impact has not been measured yet; the federal deadline does not require automation.
A US safety rule for workplaces; it does not measure how testing is done or how much diagnostic work software now does.
Licensing rules differ by country and by type of installation; nothing here measures how much of the design behind a signed installation is drafted by software.

United States. The statistics bureau projects that employment of electrical and electronics engineers will grow 8 percent from 2025 to 2035, faster than the average for all occupations, with about 16,300 openings a year on average; its table shows electrical engineers growing faster than electronics engineers. It counts jobs for one country, not which tasks those jobs involve.
A named person with standing publicly predicted something, on a date, in an attributable statement. It is recorded so that who said what, and when, stays checkable — and it never moves a task's assessment, because a prediction is not an observation. Its value arrives later: the record sits on the same page as the evidence about that occupation, so anyone reading the forecast reads the record of what happened next beside it. That is the reckoning; this site publishes no verdict on whether a forecast came true.
United States, the PJM region. The grid operator's own release says 715 new generation projects, capable of generating more than 200 GW, were accepted into Cycle 1 of its reformed interconnection process, that no backlog remains from prior queues, and that it is using HyperQ, an AI-enabled tool developed by Google's Tapestry, to help review large volumes of application data. It says PJM will be evaluating the tool's impact throughout Cycle 1. The tool reviews application data; the release does not say it runs the power-flow studies, and its partner has a commercial interest in the tool.
An employer has put it into production. Can move the baseline — weighted by scale and how similar the setting is.
Singapore. The regulations say the holder of an electrical engineer's licence is entitled to design, install, repair, maintain, operate, inspect, test and take full charge and responsibility for any electrical installation, and that the licence may be issued only to a registered professional engineer in electrical engineering with at least two years' relevant experience. An electrical technician may design and submit plans only for installations up to 1,000 volts and 150 kVA. It fixes responsibility for installations on a named, licensed person; it says nothing about software.
Failure, rollback, regulation or cost is suppressing adoption. Can lower an assessment or widen its uncertainty.
The company's own account of a reinforcement-learning method for chip floorplanning. It says the method has been used to design superhuman chip layouts in the last three generations of Google's custom AI accelerator, the TPU, generating layouts in hours rather than weeks or months of human effort. It is the developer describing its own method and results, not an independent measurement, and it covers the placement of blocks on a chip, not the rest of chip design.

An academic agent that designs analog circuits by generating circuit code, tested on the authors' own benchmark of analog circuit tasks. The abstract says it successfully designed 20 circuits, five more than standard GPT-4o; the paper's limitations section says LLMs currently lack the capability to design highly complex analog circuits. The authors are evaluating their own method, and the benchmark does not include extensive parameter optimisation.

A benchmark of 156 problems from the Verilog instructional website HDLBits, tested for functional correctness by simulation against a golden solution. In the corrected v2 results, GPT-4 passed 43.5% of the human-written problems on the first try and 58.9% within ten tries; GPT-3.5 passed 26.7%. The authors note that much of hardware design revolves around optimising power, performance and area, which the benchmark does not measure. It tests short instructional problems with 2023 models; the authors' employer designs chips and builds AI for chip design.

United States, transmission providers under federal jurisdiction. The rule's pro forma procedures say the transmission provider shall complete the cluster study within 150 calendar days of the close of the customer engagement window, and the order sets a penalty of $1,000 per business day for cluster-study delays and $2,000 per business day for restudies. It puts interconnection study work on a clock; it does not require that the studies be automated.
Regulation, subsidy or public procurement is requiring or funding adoption — the mirror of a constraint. It shows adoption is being required, not that it has happened, so one mandate is never enough on its own; two independent ones are.
United States, general industry workplaces. The rule says only qualified persons may work on electric circuit parts or equipment that have not been de-energised, and that a qualified person shall use test equipment to verify that circuit elements and equipment parts are de-energised before work proceeds. It applies to everyone doing such work, not only engineers, and it does not measure how testing or commissioning is done.

What this means for you#
If you are starting out, expect AI to take on routine hardware code and some layout, and expect interconnection and grid work to be short of engineers as rules put study deadlines on a clock. Learn to check what tools produce, and build towards the responsibilities the rules keep with a person: live work under safety rules and, where it applies, a licence to sign off installations.
Expect more tools that draft code, layouts and study inputs, and more of your time checking and signing. Your licence, your judgement on safety margins and your ability to work safely near live equipment are what the rules and clients still depend on.
Your options#
Four directions, each with its real constraints and one thing you can test this week. Continuing as you are is a legitimate choice — it just has to be a chosen one.
Stay in design, and become the person who checks what tools produce
Benchmarks show AI passing a minority of hardware problems and missing power, performance and area; someone has to specify, verify and answer for the design.
Verification work can be less visible than design, and tools change quickly.
Try an AI assistant on one small piece of hardware or control code you know well, and note what it got wrong and how long checking took.
Move towards grid interconnection and planning
Federal deadlines and penalties have put interconnection studies on a clock, and grid operators are clearing record backlogs; the work needs engineers who can run and check studies.
Power-systems work usually needs specific study software and experience with utility standards.
Look up your regional grid operator's interconnection queue and what study stage most projects are waiting at.
Get licensed and move into regulated sign-off work
Where the law licenses electrical engineers, the responsibility for installations stays with the licence holder.
Licensing requires registration as a professional engineer and local experience, and rules differ by country.
Check what licence your country requires to sign off electrical installations, and which of its requirements you already meet.
Common questions#
Not on present evidence. AI helps write hardware code, design simple circuits and lay out chips, and a grid operator is using an AI tool to review interconnection applications. But benchmarks show models passing a minority of problems, live electrical work is reserved for qualified people, installations are signed off by licensed engineers where the law requires it, and US projections expect the occupation to grow.
We do not answer that with a number of years. There is a signal you can watch instead: whether AI tools start producing designs that pass verification against power, performance and safety without an engineer's rework, and whether rules stop requiring a qualified or licensed person for live work and sign-off. Neither is true today.
Partly. On VerilogEval, a benchmark of 156 hardware-description problems, GPT-4 passed about 44% of the human-written problems on the first try; an academic system called AnalogCoder designed 20 analog circuits in its benchmark, five more than GPT-4o, and its authors say models cannot yet design highly complex analog circuits.
US projections expect electrical and electronics engineering employment to grow 8 percent from 2025 to 2035, faster than average. Grid interconnection is short of study capacity, and live work and sign-off stay with qualified and licensed people; the change is more tool-drafted design to check.
