Where this applies
England, Wales and Scotland. The regulations say a medicine classified as POM-V may only be supplied by a veterinary surgeon or a pharmacist and must be supplied in accordance with a prescription from a veterinary surgeon, and that a veterinary surgeon who prescribes such a medicine, or one under the cascade, must first carry out a clinical assessment of the animal, which must be under that veterinary surgeon's care. The 2024 amendment, in force 17 May 2024, extended the clinical-assessment duty to prescribing under the cascade. It sets who may prescribe, not how the clinical assessment is done or how long it takes.
What this means
The prescription is tied to a person and to an animal that person has assessed. Software can draft the label and the dose, but under UK law the decision cannot leave the vet who has the animal in their care.
