Simulators and computer-based training improved novice drivers' hazard anticipation, but the gains do not always carry over to real roads without real practice, a review of 29 studies found

Evidence stage
CapabilityA demo, benchmark or paper shows the task can be done. Updates what the technology can do — not what employers will do.
Tasks this bears on
Lessons in real traffic
Sitting beside a learner on public roads, judging when to step in, and using the dual controls when needed.
Still human-led✓ Evidence-backed
Theory, hazard awareness and car technology
Teaching the rules of the road, how to spot hazards, and how driver-assistance features work and where they stop working.
Being augmented✓ Evidence-backed
Where this applies
A systematic review of 29 peer-reviewed US studies of teen driver education from 2000 to 2024. It finds that technology-enhanced programmes such as computer-based hazard training and simulators enhanced skills like hazard anticipation and attention management, but that simulator improvements do not always translate into long-term reductions in real-world crash risk unless supplemented with continued training or real-life practice. It covers only US studies and is a preprint.
What this means
Machines can teach part of hazard awareness, but real driving practice still matters for safety.
What it does not yet show
A review of US studies of teenagers, posted as a preprint.
What you can check
Open arXiv 2503.05762 and find "enhanced critical skills like hazard anticipation".
Does it change the assessment?
No — and this stage does not move it either. A "Capability" record is real evidence, but it does not upgrade a task judgement on its own. The 2 linked judgements above stand where they were.
